pocketgpsworld.comFor some time now we have been trying to find ways to explain how to install and configure SatNavs in an easy to understand manner suitable for users of all skill levels. The written guides have evolved over the years and are very good, but sometimes just seeing how it is done is much easier.

We have produced a 7 minute tutorial video for users with Garmin SatNavs who can use the Garmin POILoader software. Cick here to view the installation video. Hopefully this will help by taking you through the installation in a step by step process explaining each step as we go.

Cick here to find out is your device is compatible. Click here for the online Garmin Speed Camera Installation guide or here for assistance in the Speed Camera forums.

When you see the section that shows the downloaded files in the folder your icons may be different to those shown on the video. This is because you may have different default programs to open the files. Don't worry this is quite normal.

A brilliant addition to the website
Should help a great deal of new Garmin members.

Could you mention:-
All POIs go in the same file as the Speed cameras.
On downloading the updates they go into the same folder and 'overwrite' the previous database on the unit.
There are differences in the warnings/alerts on the different units that do not look the same as a Nuvi.
The alerts do not stay in view all the time on some units.

Please erase these comments if they are covered elsewhere and if you want samples of the alerts on the Colorado/Oregon please let me know.

Could I ask a question regarding the OLD data.

On my garmin 765t, the poi data is in the poi folder on the device.

file is called. poi.gpi

the files i upload to my gps can be speed.csv or redlight.csv

does the old data get erased at the time of update ?

what happens if I just update redlight.csv ?

is there a way i can delete all old data manually ?

is there anyway to check the data on the gps ?

thanks

Yes. You must up send all the data you want on the unit each time.

If you just send the redlight.csv file with POILoader you'll have just the Redlight cameras loaded.

Delete the POI.GPI file

Browse the map at a high zoom level or check under Where to?, Extras, Custom POIs

A couple of questions from a convert from Tom Tom to a 255W.

I have downloaded poiloader and managed to add some other poi`s. The video suggests putting the database onto the Garmin device so uses the express method of doing this, I assume its overwriting Garmins own camera database so no need to enable proximity setting. However I intend to add the camera database to a sd card. Do I have to use the manual method and enable the proximity warning for each type of camera?

Also if I successfully load the database onto a card with proximity warnings enabled. Can I leave the Garmin camera database enabled? Or is it best to disable the Garmin cameras?

the speed cam database from PGSPW does NOT overwrite the garmin one. the garmin one will be called cyclops.gpi and poi loader only creates poi.gpi. as for proximity alerts there are only 2 options to select: garmin/cyclops database and custom pois. just make sure 'custom pois' is turned on for warnings. it's up to you whether you want to use garmins as well but some sites will give duplicate warnings. although it's good to use as a comparison if you wanted to.

hope that helps

Thanks for that MaFt. You still didn`t answer whether when I load the database onto the card do I use express or manual on the poiloader? If I use express does that automatically enable the warnings?

Hi,first time on this forum. I have a Garmin 760, i am off to Spain next month, i have ordered the Garmin Satnav card and i want to put the speed cameras onto the unit. If try to add them to the UK list it says "only32 POIs' are allowed". I tried putting them on the SD card and i cant see them. If i try using POI loader to the SD card it still says "only 32 Pois' allowed"

Any thoughts appart from stripping the UK ones off for the hoilday.

Jim

For voice alerts just download the package from this page that matches the database you have downloaded (Consolidated or Speed Zoned).

For units with an mp3 player - Unzip the contents into the same directory on your PC you hold the database files prior to upload. Each database file should have an mp3 with the exact same name.

Then just upload as per usual with POILoader allowing extra time for the increased amount of data. Not un-usual to see POILoader report it is Not Responding. Ignore it and let it finish - it might take a few minutes.

For units without an mp3 player - you need to convert the file to wav files and upload.

Use the latest version of POILoader from Garmin.
