The best thing i could recommend is to do a search for battery life using the search function as there has been alot of discussion about this and may be worth a read to you. _________________ NEW Tomtom GO 500 (hope it is good)

Two and Half Hours is about the longest I would expect from a fully charged One XL, BUT it is supplied with a car charger so use that at all times in the vehicle and you shouldn't have an issue - Mike |

I think you misunderstood my posting guy's ,I was referring to the battery life eg. months ....years ect...and when it needs replacing is it a return to base job .or can it be replaced by oneself no doubt someone out there has had a pop at replacing it themselves..if they have was it relatively easy ? |

The type of cell fitted has a life measured in charge cycles although there is also a shelf life degradation to take into consideration, with very sparse use I would expect two to three years use as a minimum, posibly even going to five years at a push. The trick is not to over discharge the battery, so use the device at least once every couple of weeks - Mike |

I found this on the internet, you decide if you can change it yourself or not, when the time comes, I'll have a go at mine.
1. Remove front bezel
2. unscrew 4 small screws (1 hole has anti tamper tape over)
3. remove "dome" rear of unit.
4. Remove 2 screws holding speaker in
5. Carefully remove all metal tape covering electronics
6. Remove 4 small screws securing PCB to unit
7. Remove 2 screws holding black plastic battery clip
8. Unplug small battery connector from PCB board.
9. remove battery and insert new one
Then do all of the above in reverse!
Unit fired straight up when all put back together
you will need the proper torx head screwdrivers, these came with the new battery I
bought for a tenner on ebay.
p.s. torx drive T8 size for outside casing and speaker screws, T6 size for inside screws. _________________ Audi A3 Sline sat nav |

having done a bit of research on the charging these batteries on Tom Tom Xl especially punters like myself who only use it occasionally, I find that there is no definitive answer, some say they are ok for so many charges one guy said he only charged his when needed. I asked Tom Tom and they said always keep it charged , A real pain for when it is only needed not very often, so it would be nice to find out if when you have used all the specified charges up , or weather you charge only when used, which one gives the best battery life.

Something that used to be done was to do a Reset, and then not switch on the Unit. It could then be kept "in storage" for a longer period.
The reason for this was that the Reset disconnected the battery from the electronics. A long Reset would be needed to make sure that all components had discharged. Used to be about 10 secs I think.
Pressing the Start Button would fire up the Boot loader (with the drum roll), and then it would start it's normal process.
Whether this still applies to newer models I don't know. _________________ Richard

It is certainly worth a try Richard, It really is a pain in the butt to have to keep remembering to keep it charged up, one would think in this day and age a battery could be manufactured to just charge up when wanted .. |
