You just need to connect the device to the PC and locate the drive letter associated with your TomTom device, open this and copy all its contents to the PC - When you open Windows Explorer with the TomTom connected one of the drives will be named TomTom with the red hads logo, this is the drive letter to click and copy its contents - Mike |

I found the "words" that are allowed -- there seems to be pages --
However am trying them and -- yes they do work..
-- I can now get to HOME at least
-- and change map from 3D to 2D and back !!!!
Is there any where I might get a print-out of these lists of words and phrases...
To save me keep on going in and looking..
Also my phone and text in - service works a treat !!

HELP!
the 740 has been working great..
hands free phone etc no probs
UNTIL today
what normally happens -- get in car switch on tom
-- the voice says "Phone connected"
and a small phone shows on the bottom LH corner of the screen -
If you haven't got your phone then it is with a red cross through it.
to day voice activated - but no small phone on corner.
went to menu selected phone
and instead of my phone book [previously blue-toothed across] it was asking "get numbers from phone" pressed it and it came up with the message "do I want to do this etc" - pressed YES
and after some considerable time it said "Phone book copied"
But it hadn't -- still had the first "get numbers from phone" high lighted --
tried several times now..
deleted of the device from my phone
deleted my phone from tom
and started over they do connect and at one point on my phone I had a message --"synchronising" ?? [I think]
-- still cant get the phone book across... it did do previously...
and the thing is pretty unless unless you can get the phone book..
HELP-- any ideas please...

I have had this happen to me a few times and the solution was to keep deleting the pairing, deleting the phone from TomTom, disable Bluetooth, delete TomTom from phone. Reconnect and pair etc, etc. - On each occasion several times until eventually it worked.
If you can't get this to sort itself out...
Tell me you've got a few Windows Explorer backups, so all you need do is copy a previous contacts.txt file from the contacts folder.
Failing which, create a new contacts.txt file in the following format ...
"Jack","+4412341234567","DEFAULT"
"Pam","07777123456","DEFAULT"
"Elisa","07777123457","DEFAULT"
"Vasiliki","00306945999123","DEFAULT"
Might take you a few days! Other people know better methods I think, if you can grab the address book from your phone, so keep watching. _________________ Dennis

If you have Microsoft Excel available to use there is a spreadsheet preconfigured to create the correct phone book file for the device on This Page, if you can get the phone book on to the PC then its an easy way to edit/ control the data on the TomTom - Mike |

eventually I think I have it sorted... took 7 times deleting and starting over..
only one small discrepancy -- all the numbers are duplicated -- any idea how to edit?
The other thing is that the small Phone icon has still not reappeared..
I do get the voice "Connected to Maurice's phone"
I am not going to do too much -- just in case it stops again..

Connect the device to the computer and use Windows Explorer to view the files and folders on the device, locate the folder "contacts" open this then find the file contacts.txt - right click this and choose "Open With" and select Note Pad.
You can now see all the contacts on the PC, its easy to edit the file then just choose Save
AFAIK the mobile phone symbol will only show on the TomTom with a red cross through it when the phone isn't connected, if the phone is connected then the display is blank as everything is working as expected - Mike |

Fibre wrote: | only one small discrepancy -- all the numbers are duplicated -- any idea how to edit? | Mike's given you the answer so I'll not interfere. I get this myself when I re-pair mine. I have discovered it seems to pick up from the memory in use on the phone - mine (Nokia 6230i) has the option (in Contacts) to use either phone memory, or SIM memory, or both. I'm not sure which configuration it does it with, but it picks up contacts from both sim and phone and in my case I have the contacts copied on both - belt and braces approach. But it does mean that I often get duplicated sets on the TT. I never thought of using Mike's method to sort it out, I do the hard way of somehow deleting one set of contacts on the phone then copying them, then copying them back again on the phone (OK, OK, so I'm a wally - indeed, an old wally). _________________ Dennis

the 740L seems to be working OK at the moment -- 3 days back from Tom-Tom in Fife.. Totally different animal now..
I am wondering if any one has a list of the voice commands that you can use??
I thought I had read them somewhere..
But I think I should get a print out if possible.

You aren't seeing a series of screenshots showing the voice commands??? Strange. I'll delete my previous post and try to provide them later. Sorry. _________________ David |
