A world's first! The Full In-Depth TomTom GO Review!

TomTom have put a lot of thought into GO. Firstly they've gone with something they're happy with, trying to pull the three systems to a single product platform which will make life easier going forward. They've also used a Palm/Pocket PC style processor, RAM and screen, these work very well and prices are coming down on these components.

TomTom GO is currently shipping in The Netherlands, and is expected to ship in the UK by the end of June.

I noticed there was no mention of entering addresses into GO under "Problems".

How does this compare to entering addresses in TT3?

Will it bring the same advantages as PDA-based units for TomTom Traffic and Speed Cameras detector?

By the time it launches in the UK the Speed (sorry safety) Camera POI interface will be available, but it will be sometime before the traffic will be implemented.

re the saftety poi will it run checkpoint - or similar (Being very good) or just provide the icons on screen (being not very good).

Thanks for the review Dave.
Just a few questions though:

I've been doing a bit of reading on Tom Tom's website, and they say that the unit has to be charged for at least 2 hours, then it takes another 45 minutes to obtain a GPS fix. Did you find this was the case when you first used it?

I spoke to Tom Tom support and asked about the SD card limit. They did not recommend or support anything above 256MB. Were you able to test with a larger card?

Thanks for the info Dave. I double-checked with Tom Tom about the SD card. They said that any more than 256MB worth of maps, and there would be a degradation in performance. Do they have a map management feature, like in Navman, where you can install lots of maps, and enable and disable at your leisure?

Probably the reason that TomTom is mentioning the 256Mb as a limit is because the largest mapset the provide at the moment comes on a 256Mb card. There should be no reason that they dont provide say all the mapsets for Europe (or most of it) an a 1GB card, but you would still have tho switch maps.

I wouldnt envisage a performance issue there, just a one of cost.

Yes, don't forget that TomTom you do still have to switch maps, the only exception is MRE (Major Roads of Europe), where you can navigate through countries. If you want to use street level maps from England to Spain, you would still have to switch maps at each countries border like you have to on the Pocket PC and Palm OS.

Compared to solutions like Garmin SP 2610 or Magellan Road Mate 700, it's worth noting European maps are extra with TomTom.
