Sentience, the smart sat-nav that sees the red light before you do
A research team, funded by the Government and motor industry, is developing a car that can read roads and predict when to brake.
Quote:
By being able to anticipate red lights and congestion well before the driver can see them, cars can brake smoothly and minimise fuel consumption. The driver simply steers the car, keeping his feet well away from the brake and accelerator pedals, overriding the system only in an emergency, such as a pedestrian suddenly stepping out.

Sentience, which is expected to be available in new cars from 2012, uses an on-board computer to read a digital map of the road network containing information on all speed limits and physical features such as hills and chicanes.
and we all know how accurate the speed data is...!! i also wasn't aware that hills, chicanes and speed bumps were available in the map data!

Me neither. How would it work as they put speed bumps in? Add the data too early and you get cars slowing down for no reason, too late they hit the bumps at full speed!
