This may be old news but I found this really useful.
The "Get Directions" tool in Google Maps is very powerful.
http://maps.google.com/
It has options for "by car" and "walking" etc., you can
also drag and edit the route on the screen until you are
happy. This utility lets you export it for use on GPS or
other mapping software tools.

Adding a toolbar link to this script in Internet Explorer,
Mozilla Firefox or Apple Safari to the script here:
http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/

Now when you go to Google maps and find directions,
you can the click the link stored as above,
copy and paste the text into a .gpx text file,
using the option "FULL" gives all the route details.

This lets you get the GPX file for turn-by-turn directions.

This can then be imported into Memory Map and of course Satmap Active10.

This is great for getting to the start of your walk by road or footpath.

I had tried this before but was disappointed because it converted a very complicated route into about 20 waypoints connected by straight lines.

However, now that you've explained the "full" function I think this is a cracking way of creating long routes for car journeys or on-road cycling.

Cheers WL, I'd given up on that before you pointed out the extra functionality that making it a "full" gpx route has.

Haven't tried loading it onto the Satmap yet, but putting it into mapmyride.com was really easy!

If you use the FULL option it is very good and precise even for walking.

I tried it with both MemoryMap and the SatMAP with impressive results.
I have now created a Google Maps account to keep a few start locations handy.

Hopefully the Googlemaps software will stay compatible for a long time.

The working size of the Google display and the satellite and aerial photography are useful for initial planning. Then a final review and adjustment in MemoryMap OS 1:25k before a final upload to the Active10.
