Hey all,

Just bought 2 refurb'd TT's, however the other half was using hers tonight for a round trip of approximately 60 miles.

No problems on the way there, but on the way home the TT mysteriously reset itself and then started up again, no once but twice?

She's got the latest Map from the free update and thats about it.
Version 8.300

I've checked all the settings etc and nothing out of the ordinary?

Haven't tried my one yet as waiting for TT Support to change my device from the old XDA to this one, but I may try it tomm to see if mine does the same?

Second time in as many days I've had to email them the receipt!...Useless!

Anyone else had the same or similar problem?

Cheers all

Yes, it does occasionally happen. My 910 would reset just occasionally, and my new 740 reset on a trip last weekend. It is normally quick though, and carries on. Presumably some internal watchdog spots something taking too long and restarts to fix it.

My 520 often switches itself off & if I don't do a reset it will keep doing so every time I switch it on. A reset cures it till it decides to go stupid again, which can be anything from a day to a week.

Ok. Thanks for the replies.

If this seems to be happening to most TT's then surely they would found a "Cure", rather than just putting up with it.

Found out it actually reset 3 times last night as we were trying out TT Buddies until it went silly.

If it continues then may look at sending them back, but do all TT's suffer from it or just a certain few models?

Try retting the device with a paperclip in the reset hole on the base (this won't lose any settings), if it still continues to reset use the Change Preferences/ Restore Factory Defaults (this will lose settings).

If its still messing up after that get in touch with the retailer for a replacement - Mike

Not certain models, I'd say certain units...
I've got a 720 and a 520 and two work colleagues both had 720's and none of them have ever done this.

In the old days, I had a Go300 which would have problems if there was very little space left on the memory card (internal storage in your case), but from what you say this isn't the case with yours.

however, you say:

Which means you must have updated the software too... (I assume it came with v7 on it?)

Do you have a "day one" backup (or any backups?) that you can go back to temporarily to see if it still does it?

Unfortuatley it went straight to the update page on TomTom Home and so I just updated it, however because I couldn't use my email with my new device I did back up my 520 then go to the update.

So I could use my backup as all the files should be the same beings they are identical models.

I'll be trying my 520 tonight for the first time, so I might be ok or come up against the same problems.

I'll try a reset on hers tonight and see if there are any difference.

The files are nearly identical but you will find that the map folders contain files that ensure that only the map for that device will work on that device, they cannot be transferred to the other near identical device. Any premium TT service files in the map folder such POIs or Cameras will not work on the other device. This is to stop piracy of maps and services.

There are also a few other minor files in the root directory that differ and contain details of your unit such as ttgo.bif. Some of these may update when the unit starts and others may not and cause issues.

Update.....

The other half used her TT the other night and lost count of the numerous times that the unit reset itself, but more annoyingly lost the destination it was supposed to go to.

So i thought time to give the retailer a ring (TotalPDA) but unfortunatley trying to persevere with the TT520 we're 2 days out the
28 days return policy.

I was pointed out that it would have to be a dreaded call to TomTom and like most who have experienced their so called Customer Support I wasn't looking forward to it.

but wait.......

I spoke to a guy called Lee at TT Support, very helpful and precise, unlike the TT Support by emails.

He suggested it's likely a corrupted file that is causing this and so emailed me a list of instructions on how to hopefully try and rectify this.

So here the instructions are, just in case anyone else is having similar problems.

I'll be trying this over the weekend.......so will report on how I get on.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.

On your device you may have a corrupt file that is causing the issues that you are experiencing. The solution to this is to completely remove the software from your device and reinstall it again as described in the steps below. Please ensure that you have the latest TomTom Home software installed on your computer:-

You can download and install the latest version of TomTom HOME from the following link:
TomTom Home Download

Once you have the latest version of TomTom Home installed, please follow these steps:-

STEP 1. Creating a Manual backup of your TomTom

• Charge your unit for at least two hours (preferably via the home charger)
• Perform a reset on your device (see: TT Help File 6965)

If you have not made a backup yet you can do so by making a manual backup of your TomTom. To do this, please look at the following web
page:-

TT Backup

• Connect your TomTom to the computer
• Open My Computer, you should see the TomTom as a removable drive, double click into it. (on a mac you will see the TomTom as a disk drive on your desktop)
• You will see a list of files and folders.
• Copy all of the folders on the TomTom, one by one to the backup folder.
• This can take up to 1 hour to complete depending on the device.
• If you get any error messages while copying, move on to the next folder and copy that to the backup folder.
• If possible, please make a note of any error message that occur while copying the folders, and make a note of which folder causes the error message.

IMPORTANT: We advise you to follow the next steps ONLY if you have made a successful backup of your device as described in step 1. If you are unable to complete step 1, please reply back with a list of yellow folders that you have managed to successfully copy to your PC and also reply back with any error messages that you receive at this point.

STEP 2. Format the hard-disk

• Open 'My Computer'
• Right click on the TomTom icon (the device should be seen in drive E, F,G,H,I etc) and select 'Format'.
• Do a full format by selecting FAT 32 and click on Start, do not select 'quick format'. The TomTom is now formatted.
• Disconnect the TomTom from the computer and switch it on. It will load up with a red cross on the screen.
• Reset the TomTom with a paperclip in the reset hole for 30 seconds, see TT Helpfile 6965 in how to do this.
• Once Reset, switch the TomTom off, disconnect it from the computer and then switch it back on again, it will still show a red cross on the screen.

STEP 3. Restore the Folders to the TomTom

• Connect your TomTom back to the computer and make sure it is switched on
• Go to your backup folder on your desktop, double left click into it. You will see all of your backup folders.
• Copy the folders one by one to the TomTom by right clicking on the folder, select copy then open My Computer, double left click onto the TomTom drive and choose paste.
• Turn the device off (with the on/off switch) and disconnect it from the computer.
• Switch the TomTom back on.

STEP 4. Update your device

• Open TomTom Home
• Connect your device to the PC
• A list of updates should appear, if not, click on Update my Go • Select only the program application update.
• Click on Update and Install.
• Once Installed, open TomTom Home
• Click on 'Device - Disconnect Device'.
• Turn the device off (with the on/off switch) and disconnect it from the computer.
• Switch your TomTom On to complete the installation.

The Application is now installed, and your TomTom should now be working.

STEP 5. Run the Clear Flash Tool

• Connect your TomTom to the computer
• Close TomTom Home. (on a PC, make sure you close TomTom Home from the system tray in the bottom right hand corner of your screen by the computer clock)
• Download and run the clear flash tool from : TT Clear Flash exe Make sure your TomTom is connected to the computer and switched on when you do this.
• Once Installed, open TomTom Home
• Click on 'Device - Disconnect Device'.
• Turn the device off (with the on/off switch) and disconnect it from the computer.
• Switch your TomTom On to complete the installation.

The Application is now installed, and your TomTom should now be working.

* IMPORTANT *
If you have any issues with copying the contents of the TomTom to your PC and back again, please let us know and state what error messages, if any, that there are.
Please reply back with the details of what happens.

With Best Regards

The TomTom Customer Support Team

My 740 has done this once - shut down spontaneously and reset (complete with drum roll etc) - in the month I have owned it. It was within the last couple of miles of a long (5 hour/250) mile journey. It came back to life pretty quickly with no ill effects observed afterwards.

My 930 has done this several times, and nearly always would if on battery and Bluetooth is active. Disabling bluetooth has helped but not totally eliminated the reboots.

I know what you mean, mine has done it once and I'm using it everyday just to make sure.

However the other halves has been on and off like a yo-yo,completely unusable.

Today it done it well over a dozen times and it doesn't return with the original route, so you'd have to pull over to set it up again/

So it has to go back .

Have you tried contacting Total PDA as even being outside the 28 day return limit the unit is "unfit for Purpose" as sold. you are entitled to a full refund even if the unit is outside their own self imposedlimit.

speak with your local trading standards or google consumer watch on the web for advice.

I returned a suspect Tom Tom to Halfords after 7 weeks, stood my ground after originally being told that it was not their problem and voila! A full refund!

It also would be bad publicity for Total PDA to ignore / refuse your reasonable request out of hand!

Hope that you get it resolved soon

Ken
