TomTom Car Kit

I have a problem and was wondering if I could everyones opinion.

I have an iPaq 4150 with BT TTN3 and I am now after a car solution.

The problem is that a fixed solution is no good for me as I am always using different cars in my line of work. The other problem is that I need a method of charging the BT GPS Receiver as well as the iPaq. And of course I would like some sort of a removable mount.

I know that tomtom have stopped doing the carkits for some reason and Im not sure what other options I have.

Who said that TomTom have stopped making the CarKits?

When I was over there last week there was no mention of it. If you are happy with the volume from the 4150 ( I dont have one so I dont know what the volume is like) then the TomTom carkit could be what you should go for.

These are effectively made by a German company called HR (Herbert Richter) and they supply a large number of configurations based around a common mounting platform. One of the UK importers might be kind enough to provide any spares you might need to make 2 or more interchangeable mount solutions.

The TomTom kit will come with a cable from the mount to the BT GPS for charging.

If the TomTom solution does not suit you then you could look at the Seidio 2500 mount, again the mount platform is made by HR and will have interchangeable baseplates.

Sorry about saying that tomtom dont do the car kit I shouldve checked first. But am I right in saying that they offer alot less in the box than they used to?

I have just checked the website and there doesnt appear to be a goose neck suction mount thingy in there. Seeing as Im going to be in and out of different cars the suction mount is imperative. Apart from this niggling factor the tomtom car kit appears to be a good option for me.

According to the TomTom specs you are absolutly correct the gooseneck is no longer provided. Instead you get a much better solid suction mount system see A in the diagram to the left.

I use this a lot with my Palm T3 and iPAQ 2210 and this beats the gooseneck by a long way!!

Hey no worries, that is what we are here for.

I really rate this new mount system from TT. All they need to do now is find a way to include a small amplifier in it as well. That way it would increase the volume of some of the low output PDAs and we would have an almost ideal device.

well i took the plunge on Sunday and decided to order the car kit for my 4150 striaght from TomToms Online Store. No sign of it yet but will keep you guys posted.

Any ideas how long it will take to arrive?

It ended up costing me £52 inc. delivery.

I've got the iPAQ 4150 with the TomTom car kit and it does work well. It is very bulky though as its a generic mount. The 4150 looks lost in the holder, it would be much nicer if they did a specific mount for the 4150 which was smaller. It is the 4150 car kit but the only specific 4150 part is the charger.

The volume is ok and audible, but it could do with being a tad louder.

Thought the tomtom kit never had a buil in speaker.

Think I'm gonna go for the seidio mount.

No, the TomTom holder doesn't have a built-in speaker - more's the pity Sad

as the volume on my 2210 is pathetic.

Before you rush to buy a Seidio mount, I would read the comments made about it on the Seidio forum - not very encouraging comments!!

I have read the Seidio forum and there are mixed opinions on it. However I can't find a better looking mount which has all the functions of the seidio one.

You're probably right - I have been toying with the idea of buying a Seido for my 2210 for some time now but have to admit to being a bit put off by the bad experiences people have had with it. I only wish that TomTom would amplify their own as my only complaint with it is the lack of additional voice amplification. There is very little choice with amplified mounts at the moment - sadly!

very true. I have speaking to someone who is using the seidio mount in his car and he has nothing but praises about it.

About the whining noise, he only gets this for 10 minutes or so and it is due to his battery being low.

Only thing I wasn't too happy about is that you can no longer get the silver mounts.
