Hi all,

I have the offer of a reasonably priced Ipaq 2210 which I intend to use for GPS mapping with loadable maps for flying and when in the car.

Is this a good unit for this purpose?

Which is a reasonably priced GPS reciever? Am I best to use the Bluetooth or a different format with the 2210? Ideally Id like a remote type receiver which I can place on the dash as opposed to fitted directly to the Ipaq.

I have a friend who uses the 3850 with a Navman GPS and together with the digitial maps, it is a very good combination. Can I expect the 2210 to be just as good or better?

Can I use this setup in the car with Autoroute like software to give turn by turn information aswell?

Ninj, the 2210 is a good workhorse, I have two myself and use every conceivable GPS app on both of my 2210's.

We need to know which country you're in, so please update your profile with the country specs.

AutoRoute or Pocket Streets (on Pocket PC) is really poor and will not give you directional turns or navigation, you should expect the same quality of maps from Navman on the 2210, all GPS software will work with the 2210's and most GPS Receivers will be it Bluetooth, cabled or CF card GPS Receivers, just make sure you have a minimum of 128mb for map storage (you'll need it!), about the only GPS that won't work on the 2210 is the Navman sleeve.

Im in Scotland.

Which are the better Road Navigation type programs then if Autoroute etc is to be avoided?

I was considering a Dell Axim X5 but I think Bluetooth aside, the 2210 has the edge, would you agree?

I fancy BT as I would be able to stick the receiver on the dash and mount the PDA somewhere else.

Yep the 2210 will by far surpass the Dell Axim in terms of connectivity and robustness. There's three packages I would suggest looking at are CoPilot Live, TomTom Navigator 3 and Navman SmartST Pro V2. We've got reviews of all three of these on our reviews page:-

My personal preference at the momente is the Emtac/Socket BT GPS and GlobalSat/DConnex. If you want to go further and use datalogging then then RoyalTek is a good beastie but a lot larger.

As an alternative, can I connect the 2210 to a friends Magellan 315 (providing I get the right cable). What else do I need in addition to the 2210/Magellan315/Cable ?

How effective would a Magellan 315 or indeed any handheld GPS connected to a PDA be compared to a GPS Receiver connected to the PDA?

He also has a yellow Sportrak (non mapping version).

Does the same apply? I think, the yellow Sportrak is pretty much a newer Magellan 315?

You certainly can connect it up - I used my Magellan 315 for a while before I got my GPS CF card.....

I got my cable from www.pc-mobile.net - very reasonably priced, and exceptionally swift delivery

Further to the earlier posts, I have bought the iPaq2210.

I now need a GPS receiver. If I go for bluetooth with the 2210, do I only need a Bluetooth GPS receiver and nothing else (software asside)?

How does the GPS Receiver get its power? Is it via the iPaq? If so, what sort of battery drain can I expect?

Sorry for the stupid questions, but Ive never seen BT in action.

Yes you will only need the receiver.

The BT receiver will get its power either from an internal rechargable battery, removable rechargable battery or standard AAA rechargable/alkaline batteries dependent on the make/model of receiver you choose.

It's worth noting that internal battery models have a life expectancy of around 400 charges and cannot be replaced.

Also many have an in-car adaptor to run/charge the receiver off the cars power supply.
