Tsk Tsk, those backups are vital! especially if you are updating software. Even if it all works to plan, who knows whether you will LIKE the changes?

There's nothing you can do about the compass short of going back to v7.
It is possible to do this but will require messing with the system files. If you want to do it (and you can't if you've also updated to v815 maps), get that backup done now before you go any further.

I couldn't back up version 7 cos it was already on 8 when I bought it but not the latest version

Tomtom gave me a fix which was format the memory, clear flash, copy files back minus loquendo. Then delete application and computer voices from computer and device then connect to home, download application, download voice Kate.

Ths worked fine for a whole week before Kate started stuttering. I switched to Simon and he was just the same.

I emailed Tomtom who suggested going back to app 7.480 as a temporary measure until a new update is released. I haven't done this, I simply use human voices and everything works fine except for road names etc which I can manage without.

However it does sound as if an update is on the way and they acknowledge there is a problem. Without the community on this site sharing their experiences I doubt whether they would even accept there is a problem.

It has been such along time now since TomTom introduced this issue and still they seem to be in denial.

I have given up, got my old Nuvi 360 out, bought it device lifetime map upgrades from Garmin (£99.00 for Europe), latest device and RDS firmware, pocketgpsworld cameras and voices and it all seems to work quite well.

Granted, the display is a lot less detailed but at least it works...

And the RDS gets updates in under 30 seconds of power up. My TT one never gets anything where I live.

Paul, are you wanting to run the v7 on your XDA or have you got a standalone navigation device - this thread is really about the latest software release for the x20 and x30 ranges of the Go products - Mike

Korndog says it's a secondhand Go520...

There is an archive of previous versions on http://www.oldboy.me.uk/TomTomUpdates/

V7.221 or V7.481 would be suitable (I preferred v7.221, but IIRC, it had problems with the Traffic Service, which I didn't use).
And as I said above, this won't work if you have updated to v815 maps.

As ever - do a complete backup with Windows Explorer, NOT TT Home, before doing any tweaking.

This really is a disgrace after this long. And it's a very dangerous game for Tom Tom to play. I'm sure all the people who got shiny new TTs for christmas are fine and TT's bosses think that's all that matters.

But how many of those people searched on here before making a decision? if someone asked my advice on a navigation device these days I'd say TTs are good but falling away with cr*p tech support, dreadful response times to bug fixes and a complete disregard for reinforcing a strong client base. Very soon places like PGPSW will be reluctant to recommend. It's like viral marketing in reverse!

How many of us will try the free trial on hand-held device software if it is offered? How many of us have GPS enabled smart-phones? How many of us would like to slim down the number of devices on their dash if the products were right? I could go on but I'm starting to feel like I'm on an episode of 'Grumpy Old Men'. However I can answer yes to all of the above and if the product turned out to be better than the stale half finished rubbish TT feed us we'd be heralding the dawn of a new era.

I advised a collegue to get a basic Tom Tom this christmas because not a single one of the extra things I'm supposed to get work.

Jukebox? - Fixed volume levels so it clips in my car. (but the faders are still there!!!???...since 3 software revisions ago!!
Traffic? - Only interesting because it creates a game of gamble on long journeys....will the incident be there?
Hands Free? - well if you drive a Bentley you might hear it.
TMC? - do a search
Once only setup? - you're kidding. Any software update wipes out half of what you spent hours setting up with no warning (and because of lazy programming as far as I can see).

If our devices weren't hardware but subscription they'd be fixed overnight. My old Destinator 6 install might be getting a dust down at this rate. And I never thought I would be ever saying that 2 years ago when Tom Tom looked superior and worth the premium.

OK rant over. Now have glass of wine. All is calm.

Sorry, I really should update my profile. My 710 decided to stop charging, I think it's the socket on the 710 but not been able to get one. I just carry the XDA with me as a back up.
I'll take a look at oldboys archive cheers Very Happy but will I still be able to upload my phone contacts to the 520 if I downgrade to v7?

If you have fun and games trying to get the phone book working have a look at This page where there is an Excel spreadsheet pre formatted top create a file that will work with the TomTom and doesn't rely upon phone book transfer from the phone.

If you already have the phone book on the 710 and want to put it on the new toy simply copy the "contact.txt" file which is contained within the "contacts" folder on the device to the newer unit - Mike

I had it working fine on the 520, it displayed the name of the caller and she actually spoke the name, only feature that didn't work was the texting.
I've backed up the 520 onto my pc so I could just copy the contacts file from that

It's not the Jukebox... just the FM transmitter. The volume slider works fine on Bluetooth or Line out.
And it's not a bug, but done deliberately in order to maximise signal to noise ratio. Latest software (on the x40 models at least) actually say "use radio to adjust volume" when you try to use the volume slider.
Not sure why it clips on your car radio, it's absolutely fine on mine (but I usually use Bluetooth anyway. For me the quality is much better).

Agreed. It has major problems.

I don't use it much - my phone doesn't have Bluetooth, but I've tried it with my wife's and it was OK in my T-reg Honda CRV which sounds like a tractor.

I must say, it has never surprised me that you have to re-do a few settings. I often have to when I update PC software too. If it takes you hours to set up a few camera warnings, you're doing something wrong! 5-10 minutes tops...

Andy,
I went to see our equipment on Coldplay recently. While I was at the video control area I should have lent over to the sound guy and super-glued the first 10 faders on his sound desk to full and told him it was a necessity to maximise his signal to noise ratio. In short, if the faders don't work then they shouldn't be there. And if the sound isn't loud enough flat out for the average car stereo then the hardware wasn't specified right in the first place as the output of the amp is too low. it should match the level of a radio station or at least have enough adjustment to match it at say, 70%. Sorry mate but nothing you say about the history of this level issue will change the fact that it isn't easy enough for my retired father to use.

Traffic - I understand you don't use it but take my word for it or visit the traffic forum. General concensus is folk like me have paid out monthy for 2 years for a service which never improves. It could be argued that the supplier of the information is at fault but i don't see Tom Tom lobbying the government to make reprting a road closure mandatory.

OK so if you use speed camera settings it doesn't take 'hours' but if you use speed zoned ones it's a real a*se to put them all back in and in programming terms, especially with the generally passive nature of the OS, and the instant convenience of a PC hard drive to temp it to, it should be easy to take any settings for OV2 files and restore them as part of the process.

Andy, I really don't want to fire at you with all guns blazing because you are a well respected and knowledgeable forum member. However, I think we are all a bit geeky here and want to understand the ins and outs of TT. But lets not look at this through rose coloured spectacles. The point I was trying to make is that if you are just Joe Public and you buy it because of the feature list on the box you'll be dissapointed. That's why TT are running the gauntlet because WE aren't Joe Public. We want to dive in, discuss, fix, analyse etc. Other people will just vote with their feet.

And the speed and way which TT respond stinks. I work in the event industry. Try telling an operator who is about to run a live TV show that something doesn't work and you won't be fixing it for 3 months evn though he bought it on the strength of those features. You'd be torn up for toilet paper mate. And honesty is the best policy. TT would establish a better and more decent relationship if they had a list of known bugs and short term fixes rather than you wizards doing it for them. We'd respect them a lot more if that were the case.

Oh and the wine is good. Wish I could share it with you and discuss this as we cleared off a couple of bottles! maybe I should attend the next get together and put a name to my grumpy face :-)

Ive installed v7 firmware and everything works fine. In fact, I can't see any difference, apart from having a compass you can actually see without having to put on reading glasses that is.
I took it for a test drive and no stuttering voice. Only thing I cant do is add the phone contacts from 2 phones which I dont think you can do on the later versions anyway.
I'll be sticking with this version until TomTom get their act together. Cheers for your help Andy and Mike.
