Press release: 15.01.09 Alternative Positioning Technologies Cell-ID and Wi-Fi Combined with A-GPS Will Provide 25% of All Positioning Solutions by 2014

Location Based Services Research Service | Alternative Positioning Technologies

Many next-generation LBS applications such as social networking, local search, advertising, and geo-tagging are expected to be used in urban and indoor environments where GPS either underperforms in terms of fix times or accuracy, or fails altogether. So alternative positioning technologies such as Wi-Fi and Cell-ID will become increasingly important.

“Users expect a seamless and transparent location experience regardless of application or environment,” says ABI Research director Dominique Bonte. “Since no single positioning technology can provide this, the future will be about hybrid positioning systems, combining A-GPS, Cell-ID, Wi-Fi, cellular, motion sensors, and even TV broadcast and proximity technologies such as Bluetooth, NFC and RFID. A-GPS, Wi-Fi and Cell-ID will be the winning combination offering accuracy, availability, interoperability and short fix times at low cost. It will represent 25% of all positioning solutions by 2014. Stand-alone Cell-ID and/or Wi-Fi will remain important in regions with low GPS handset penetration.“

While many barriers such as handset penetration levels and the lack of open platforms still hinder the adoption of alternative positioning methods, the licensing of Skyhook Wireless’s Wi-Fi positioning to GPS-chipset vendors Broadcom, Qualcomm, SiRF, and CSR will contribute to widespread availability. Similarly, Sprint’s recent decision to allow third-party developers access to its network-based location platform via location aggregators such as Wavemarket, Loc-Aid, and uLocate will stimulate the use of hybrid positioning.

At the same time, alternative positioning technologies are shaking up the entire location ecosystem. Major vendors such as Google are building their own reference databases of cell-tower and/or Wi-Fi hotspot locations via user-generated content and/or self-learning mechanisms, allowing them to offer LBS services independent of carriers. More importantly, it is likely they will make their location assets available to smaller vendors, further endangering the position of the carriers.

“Alternative Positioning Technologies,” a new study from ABI Research, examines the main trends in this market and offers an in-depth discussion of the ecosystem and value chain. It includes detailed descriptions of the main players, business models, drivers and barriers, as well as detailed forecasts. The report forms part of the firm’s Location Aware Services Research Service.

ABI Research is a leading market research firm focused on the impact of emerging technologies on global consumer and business markets. Utilizing a unique blend of market intelligence, primary research, and expert assessment from its worldwide team of industry analysts, ABI Research assists hundreds of clients each year with their strategic growth initiatives. Press release: 15.01.09 OKI Starts Development of ISLAND System for Tourist Drivers, Under Contract from Japan’s MIC

Helps Promote Okinawa Becoming a Ubiquitous Tourism Region Based on OKI’s Inter-Vehicle Communication Technology

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TOKYO:6703) today announced it has received a contract from Japan’s MIC (Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) to develop a “Demonstration of car navigation system to support comfortable driving for tourists,” as part of a project promoting Ubiquitous Special Zones(1). Under the contract, OKI started to develop the ISLAND (Integrated Spot Local Assistance & News Delivery) System for tourist drivers using its DSRC (2) inter-vehicle communication system.

Considering the characteristics of tourist spots lacking information and communication infrastructure, this system can offer information that matches tourist drivers’ needs. Such information is provided not through wireless base stations connected to an information delivery center by a wired network, but through inter-vehicle communication technology where vehicles convey information, and a network is created directly by inter-vehicle communication. The service provided to tourist drivers includes:

1. Local TPO information

2. Word-of-mouth information

3. Traffic jam information

4. Concierge service for foreign tourists, etc.

To promote the system and the service, OKI plans to collaborate with related public institutions in Okinawa Prefecture and Uruma City, as well as local public and private institutions such as the Information Industry Association of Okinawa. In addition, OKI plans to establish research collaboration with Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. to support safe driving at tourist sights.

Regarding DSRC inter-vehicle communication in Japan, an inter-vehicle communication system to support safe driving is being developed to achieve safe and reliable road traffic. At the end of this fiscal year ending March 31, 2009, a large-scale field trial to support safe driving will be conducted between the public and private sectors. OKI is currently providing equipment to enable DSRC inter-vehicle communication for safe driving to all the participating auto makers. OKI is also planning to integrate the platform used in DSRC inter-vehicle communication for safe driving with DSRC inter-vehicle communication for comfortable driving to deliver tourist information via the ISLAND system. Commercialization is expected at an early date. In addition, OKI will work with auto makers, car navigation makers, and in-vehicle equipment manufacturers to develop terminals and delivery applications suitable to tourist drivers and will work to start service offering at an early date.

[About “Demonstration of car navigation system to support comfortable driving for tourists”]

This is a project that will be implemented at Uruma City, Okinawa Prefecture for three years (from the fiscal year ending March 2009 to fiscal year ending March 2011). This project will be conducted at a Ubiquitous Special Zone categorized as a “Ubiquitous Tourism Region.” This system to be developed and demonstrated will consist of a “system to support comfortable driving” to deliver tourist information and a “sub system to support safety driving.”

1. System to support comfortable driving

A DSRC inter-vehicle communication-based tourist information delivery function will be added on to the ETC in-vehicle system that is mounted on almost all rental cars. Information will be delivered through communication between the roadside repeater equipment and in-vehicle equipment, which will both be equipped with DSRC inter-vehicle communication equipment. There is no need for the roadside repeater equipment to be connected to the information delivery center or a wired network because the content will be updated from the information each car will transport. Thus, without a large amount of cost to lay out wired networks, an infrastructure can be established by simply placing roadside repeater equipment on the road that has DSRC inter-vehicle communication equipment.

2. Sub system to support safe driving

This is a system to help notify drivers in accident-prone areas and non line-of-sight areas at tourist locations by detecting the location of other vehicles nearby. The accuracy of location information is improved by using the roadside repeater equipment as a reference point and sending GPS correction information. By using this corrected information, each vehicle will correct their GPS location information and will exchange information directly or via the roadside repeater equipment on the road.

The system uses 5.8GHz band DSRC inter-vehicle communication to exchange information. On the other hand, when sending GPS correction information from the roadside repeater equipment, on the road, it will use UHF bandwidth, which will be used in ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) going forward.

[Glossary]

*1 Ubiquitous Special Zone:

This is an area where leading edge services using ubiquitous network technology, in which Japan excels, are being developed and where field trials are being conducted. The 28 zones, assigned in municipality units, are selected by MIC and are based on MIC’s “ICT Reform Program” and “Enhancing Global ICT Competitiveness Program.”

*2 DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communications):

This is a communication method for short range used in road-to-vehicle communication such as ETC and controlling commercial vehicles. The range of communication is usually several meters to several hundred meters, so the system can be used in parking lots, logistic centers, gas stations, convenience stores, etc.

Press release: Portable GPS -- Moving Beyond Location, Navigation and Information

Will We Ever Be Lost Again?

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire) - Men won't admit to many things. They rarely acknowledge that they're going bald, gained a few pounds, caught a cold or are ever wrong. One thing you almost never hear a man say is that he's lost, especially when he's behind the wheel. What's worse (as many women will attest) is that men typically refuse to pull over and ask for directions -- even if it means driving in circles for hours.

But thanks to modern technology, men no longer need to 'fess up to their shortcomings on the road, or wander aimlessly hoping to stumble across a familiar street or the correct exit to get them back on track.

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) have made life on the highway easier to navigate, improved time management and made traveling less stressful for road warriors today. A key component of these and many other electronic devices is highly refined, ultrapure copper. Although individual GPS units do not contain a large amount of copper, they would not be able to perform critical functions without it. "Now that GPS has made personal navigation so easy and so accessible, there's no going backwards," says Robert Weed, a vice president of the Copper Development Association whose job is to work closely with original equipment manufacturers, including automotive component suppliers. "All of the auto manufacturers now offer built-in GPS as an option, and eventually GPS will be as necessary as every other vehicle control system. The day is not far off when computer-controlled traffic systems will become a reality, and GPS will be required to accomplish this." These portable, affordable and increasingly ubiquitous navigation systems communicate directly with a fleet of orbiting satellites to determine their location, velocity and time, 24 hours a day, regardless of weather or local geographic conditions.

Although developed for aerospace and military use, civilian GPS units have numerous applications, but are mainly used as navigation aids for driving, flying, sailing, fishing, hiking, running, biking and even golfing.

"No longer are you trying to decipher a route from an Internet map or having to stop for directions," says Ted Gartner, media relations manager for Garmin, a leading manufacturer of GPS devices. "All the maps you need to get from point A to point B are loaded into that box sitting on your dashboard. What's great about GPS is that it lets you know where you are and tells you how to get where you want to go."

Unlike a compass, which simply indicates geographic direction based on magnetic north, GPS receivers are sophisticated microprocessors that provide consumers with a wealth of valuable logistic information. Each electronic device contains a circuit board with several layers of copper that enable its various functions. Typically, Garmin's GPS devices contain about one to one-and-a-half ounces of copper, Gartner added.

Originally known as NAVSTAR (for Navigation Satellite Timing and Ranging), GPS was invented by the military and, as a result, the devices all continue to acquire their positioning signals from a network of satellites placed in orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. When units were first introduced to consumers, they were intentionally less precise than military versions, but as their popularity grew, additional functions and increasing sophistication inevitably followed.

Today, a number of companies manufacture navigation systems for your car, your cell phone or countless other hand-held devices. Units installed in vehicles are now commonplace, offering a variety of wide-screen, voice-activated, preloaded street maps covering North and South America, Puerto Rico, Asia and areas throughout Europe. Some units offer additional features such as 3-D views, Bluetooth wireless capability, roadside assistance and real-time traffic updates. Most models provide software that allows users to update and expand navigation data online or through retail stores that sell the devices.

Garmin has sold over 31 million GPS units since consumer sales began to take off in 2007, and some 10.6 million units in just the first three quarters of 2008. TomTom, another global GPS manufacturer, expected to sell up to 12 million "personal navigation devices," or PNDs, worldwide in 2008, earning $2.4 billion in U.S. dollars.

"Whether you're in downtown Manhattan or traveling on a dirt road out in Kansas, the GPS works," Gartner says. "I like to compare GPS to the microwave phenomenon. When you have one, you soon wonder how you ever lived without it. It's a convenience more than anything."

Many GPS units now offer features that extend far beyond basic navigation. Some include directions to points of interest at any location, including restaurants, hotels, clubs, gas stations and even ATMs. Models sold for hikers include live Internet links to orienteering events and activities, and golf GPS units contain maps and hole-to-hole playing information for individual courses around the globe.

"It's so nice to have these features when you're in an unfamiliar place or going on a spur-of-the-moment travel," Gartner adds. "It gives you the opportunity to search for a hotel or restaurant in order of proximity and then call ahead so you can make reservations."

GPS products are sold online, through Web sites such as Amazon.com, and in consumer electronic retail stores. Prices range anywhere from $100 up to $1,000, depending on the make, model and features available.

While many consumers increasingly opt for portable devices they can carry or easily transfer from vehicle to vehicle, some companies see built-in navigation systems as an essential component of every automobile in the future. The TomTom ONE is the company's top-selling GPS device. TomTom recently announced a strategic partnership with auto manufacturer Renault to provide fully-integrated navigation systems in Renault models beginning in 2009.

According to TomTom, GPS devices deliver "content and services that enhance the core navigation experience for consumers. With the best maps, routing and safety features available, (users) safely travel the most efficient routes, most cost-effectively. In essence, we empower our customers to navigate like a local wherever they go."

So ladies, the next time you go for a drive with your man in an unfamiliar territory, consider carrying along a portable GPS if his car isn't equipped with one. And take comfort and satisfaction in knowing that, although it won't be your voice giving the directions, the automated voice he'll hear telling him which way to go will invariably be a woman's.

Press release: Navman Completes Spirit Sat-Nav Range with addition of Premium Models S200 Regional, S200 Europe & S300T add Bluetooth, TMC and European maps to innovative Spirit navigation software

GPS pioneer Navman announces the launch of three new Sat-Nav devices – the S200 Regional, S200 Europe and S300T. The new models complement the entry-level S100, launched in November 2008, and add Bluetooth connectivity, integrated Traffic (TMC), European maps and an FM transmitter to Navman’s innovative Spirit software platform with Glide Touch control system. At 13.5mm the Spirit series is ultra-slim and lightweight in design with a sleek 4.3" super flat widescreen. All models in the range include Navman’s unique Live Local Search facility for instant access to up-to-date details of local shops, restaurants, museums and other facilities.

Navman’s new “Spirit” software, jointly developed by the R&D team at Navman owner, Mio Technology, and global innovation and design consultancy IDEO, puts usability at the centre of all Navman Spirit devices. A simplified user interface focuses on three key areas - "go" for regular navigation instructions like putting in an address; "find" to search for specific places, areas or businesses; and "explore" which enables users to search an area in greater detail, or pull up information about local services and amenities using Live Local Search. With Navman’s revolutionary Glide Touch user-interface, users simply tap and slide the touchscreen to open, dock, pan and scroll menus, similar to the latest MP3 players and smartphones.

Blending navigation with a local information directory, Navman’s Live Local Search facility enables users to explore and find local facilities while on the move. Powered by European search directory, Infobel, and accessed via a Bluetooth connection to a mobile phone, Live Local Search provides direct access to an Internet database of local amenities such as nearby shops, businesses, hotels, museums and restaurants. Users can search via name or type of service, navigate directly to the location or make a hands free call to book a table or reserve a theatre ticket. With a pedestrian mode that includes 2D city maps, building outlines and walking instructions, the portability of the Spirit devices also mean the service is as much use out of the car.

New navigation features focus on safe and simple navigation. The addition of text to speech technology provides spoken next turn road names and numbers in addition to directions, while an FM transmitter enables directions to be played directly through a car radio and speakers. All three devices use Navman’s new ClearView maps and 3D Junction Views which strip out unimportant detail from maps and provide 3D overviews of major road junctions to help make sure drivers always make the right turning. Further, 3D representations of key landmarks in major cities help drivers better orientate themselves in urban areas. The S300T also offers free live traffic information and intelligent re-routing options via an integrated TMC receiver with lifetime subscription.

The S200 Regional, S200 European and S300T will be available in the UK from mid January 2009 with retail pricing starting at £179.99 for the S100 and running to £249.99 for the S300T.

Press release: 15.01.09 Trimble Revises Fourth Quarter 2008 Guidance

January 15, 2009

Sunnyvale,CA-- Trimble (Nasdaq: TRMB) today announced that it expects fourth quarter 2008 revenue in the range of $268 to $269 million and non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.22 to $0.24. Trimble will discuss its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2008 financials in detail in its regularly scheduled conference call on February 3, 2009.

"During our last conference call we discussed the abrupt decline in demand that began in mid-September in our Engineering and Construction segment as a result of uncertainty in the financial markets. This uncertainty continued through the fourth quarter, making cash conservation the priority within our end-customer group and distribution channel. As a result, customers have dramatically reduced discretionary capital spending in the U.S. and Europe and dealers have tightened inventories," said Steven W. Berglund, Trimble's president and chief executive officer. "While we anticipated a difficult fourth quarter, the scale of the revenue shortfall exceeded our expectations. In response, we took additional cost-reduction measures this month to realign cost and revenue and restore our financial model. These actions, in combination with those taken in 2008, have resulted in a cumulative company-wide reduction in headcount of approximately 10 percent. The effect of these reductions will not be fully reflected until the second quarter of 2009. The decline in quarterly earnings per share, when compared to the prior year, principally reflects the loss of incremental gross margin from the revenue shortfall and some non-recurring costs, partially offset by a significant, structural tax savings.

"The drop in demand has been concentrated in the Engineering and Construction segment. Our revenue from agricultural products continued to grow at double digit levels in the fourth quarter. The Mobile Solutions segment's order pipeline continues to be resilient. We also believe the launch of new products, new ventures and new lines of business will positively contribute to 2009 results and set the stage for additional growth as the economy stabilizes.

"The outlook for the Engineering and Construction segment in 2009 is unclear. Although we do not believe the fourth quarter represents baseline performance because of the inventory effects, the impact of foreign exchange rates, and the relative collapse of confidence, it is not possible to reliably forecast this business at this time. Our current planning assumption for the Engineering and Construction segment is that the first quarter will reflect conditions similar to those in the fourth quarter. Later in the year, once our Engineering and Construction customer base has regained sufficient clarity about the environment to make rational investment decisions, we believe we can take our message of cost reduction and productivity improvement into recessionary conditions with some success, albeit at lower levels than we had expected a few months ago.

"We are taking steps to restore our long term financial model during this period of unprecedented uncertainty and challenge. This will allow us to pursue our other objective - that of the continued strategic development of our markets and improvement in our competitive position. During the recession of 2001 - 2002 we created a business platform that allowed us to generate strong revenue and income growth for the following six years. We expect to utilize this time of challenge to do the same," concluded Berglund.

Safe Harbor
Certain statements made in this press release are forward-looking statements within the meaning of Section 21E of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, as amended, and are made pursuant to the safe harbor provisions of the Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. These statements include expectations for future financial market conditions, engineering and construction market spending, the order pipeline for Mobile Solutions, the revenue and earnings per share that Trimble expects to report in the fourth quarter, changes in tax-rate and the impact of cost-reduction efforts on financial results in fiscal 2009. These forward-looking statements are subject to change, and actual results may materially differ from those set forth in this press release due to certain risks and uncertainties. If the current global credit crisis and recessionary conditions in the U.S. and Europe show no signs of recovery it may negatively impact our customers' purchasing decisions worldwide including in emerging markets. In addition, the Company's results may be adversely affected if the Company is unable to market, manufacture and ship new products. Any weakening of our accounts receivable or write-off of goodwill could also impair our financial results. Any failure to achieve predicted results could negatively impact the Company's revenues, cash flow from operations and other financial results. Whether the Company achieves growth will also depend on a number of other factors, including the risks detailed from time to time in reports filed with the SEC, including its quarterly reports on Form 10-Q and its annual report on Form 10-K. Undue reliance should not be placed on any forward-looking statement contained herein, especially in light of greater uncertainty than normal in the economy in general. These statements reflect the Company's position as of the date of this release. The Company expressly disclaims any undertaking to release publicly any updates or revisions to any statements to reflect any change in the Company's expectations or any change of events, conditions, or circumstances on which any such statement is based.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Andrew Seybold, Inc. today announced the opening of nominations for the annual Andrew Seybold Choice Awards, which recognize the accomplishments of companies in developing leading-edge technologies, devices, services and applications that impact the acceptance and use of wireless communications by business, consumer and Internet users.

Anyone wishing to submit a nomination is encouraged to visit http://www.andrewseybold.com/ChoiceAwards.asp to access the entry rules and nomination form. “Fueled by remarkable energy and creativity, the wireless industry has gained a level of importance in business and society that would scarcely have been imaginable only a decade or two ago,” Seybold said. “Innovation has driven tremendous growth for the industry and from a mere convenience, wireless communications has become must-have technology for business and consumers. With the Choice Awards, we continue to seek out the innovators and bring them to the attention of the media and the markets.”

Award categories include Most Innovative Wireless Technology; Most Innovative Wireless Device; Most Innovative Wireless Service; and Most innovative Wireless Application. Nominees must have released their offerings commercially during 2008, and each entry will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

“These awards are inherently multidimensional in that they address all of the factors that contribute to market success,” Seybold said. “Each offering must fulfill a want or need; it must be technologically sound; it must be marketable; it must simplify the user’s life; and it must provide demonstrable value in terms of its usefulness and affordability.”

Seybold established the Choice Awards in 2002 and they are regarded by many as the “Oscars” of the wireless industry. Press release: 16.01.09 Pulse’s New Micro-acoustic Speaker Platform Production Line Increases Quality While Reducing Costs and Time-to-Market

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pulse, a Technitrol Company (NYSE: TNL), a worldwide leader in electronic component and subassembly design and manufacturing, introduces a new mature and proven platform for the design and production of micro-acoustic speakers. Utilizing the same core structure for each product shortens time-to-market, reduces product development costs, reduces the number of parts needed for each new product, and improves quality. With this platform, Pulse can quickly meet market demand for innovative, small, high-performance, price-competitive receivers and loudspeakers. Pulse’s acoustic products are used in mobile phones, laptops, GPS systems, cameras, MP3 players, portable gaming consoles, DVD players, and hands-free devices.

Pulse HVT Division’s new flexible platform enables the design and manufacture of smaller and thinner components. A wide array of component sizes and widths can be made on a single production line because it is easy to make production changes between the different products. The platform currently adapts to lengths from 10 to 25mm with widths of 5 to 18mm. Because multiple, dedicated lines are unnecessary, development costs for each product can be reduced significantly. Parts can be made cost-effectively in smaller volumes because they use a common core and fewer dedicated parts are needed for each new product. The highest quality is ensured by accommodating best-practice evaluation and workflow as well as standard and customer-requested tests for power and performance.

“It used to take months to design and produce these micro-acoustics products, but now, with our new platform, it takes only a few weeks,” said Jesper Stenbaek, sales manager Pulse HVT Division. “We can meet requirements for odd sizes and customized dimensions and can produce more than one type of component on a line. Quality is high because it’s a proven part on a proven platform.”

“Through an intensive design and process study we have achieved a solid and robust platform,” explained Andreas Eberhardt Sørensen, manager, application engineering, Pulse HVT Division. “Materials, part designs, and assembly processes have been benchmarked towards several earlier designs and chosen from a best practice philosophy. All our research and development is done to ensure that quality is implemented in the product from the start, that the components have the built-in benefits of robust design and mature mechanics, and that the line offers a stable workflow process for consistent production.”

The first product launched on the new platform was Pulse’s 711ST, a high-quality leak-tolerant electro-dynamic receiver of the moving-coil type. It was designed as a receiver in mobile and cordless phones. The receiver has an expanded air pump capacity for more sound at low frequencies and delivers high sound pressure and low total harmonic distortion (THD). The front resonator volume can be tailored to fit the customer’s application. In developing the receiver, Pulse focused on the harsh environment to which a mobile phone is exposed, both during assembly and in the end-user market. The performance is consistent in the most environmentally stressing situations. A product data sheet for the 711ST is available at http://www.pulseeng.com/file.php?3422.

Press release: 16.01.09 flaik Inc. Launches GPS Satellite-Based Guest Locator System at Steamboat

BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Boulder location-based services company flaik Inc. has teamed up with the Steamboat Ski Resort & Corporation to provide its cutting-edge GPS satellite-based guest locator and resort amenity system across the nearly 3,000-acre Steamboat Ski Area this winter.

“Steamboat has always pioneered state-of-the-art guest technologies,” said Steve Kenny, flaik CEO. “Their application of the first GPS-based peace-of-mind solution for ski and snowboard schools is another example of the resort’s commitment to customer service.”

Using GPS-enabled tags assigned to each individual, the flaik system can locate individuals, allow instructors and Ski & Snowboard school supervisors to monitor students, deliver run-by-run and day-by-day statistics, and enable skiers and boarders to share their day with friends and families. Currently, every child in Steamboat’s childcare and Ski & Snowboard program receives a Steamboat MountainWatch, powered by flaik device.

“Steamboat’s partnership with flaik significantly augments our position as the best mountain resort destination for families,” said Jim Schneider, vice president of skier services at Steamboat. “Our investment in this cutting-edge technology affords parents peace of mind when their children are in our Ski & Snowboard school programs. In the coming months, powderhounds will benefit from the technology’s unique social networking services as the system’s capabilities continue to expand across the resort.”

flaik recently relocated its headquarters from Brisbane, Australia, to Boulder and is part of the 8th Continent Aerospace Business Incubator, managed by the Boulder Innovation Center (BIC). “flaik is a perfect example of a Space 2.0 company – using space-related technology in commercial applications as Steamboat is doing,” said Burke Fort, director of the 8th Continent Project, based in Golden at the Colorado School of Mines.

“flaik and Steamboat are filling a market need using the constellation of GPS satellites originally deployed by NASA and the Department of Defense,” said BIC Director Tim Bour. “The company is establishing relationships within Colorado’s technology, workforce, venture capital and ski industry communities – a perfect fit for the BIC’s services, and part of the 8th Continent Project’s initiative to position Colorado as the global economic center for the commercialization of space-derived technologies.”

Press release: MAGELLAN® ANNOUNCES NEW TRITON SOFTWARE WITH IMPROVED NORTH AMERICAN BASEMAP

ORLANDO, FL - Magellan, one of the leading GPS brands, announced the availability of its enhanced Triton software with an Improved North American Basemap for an even greater user experience. Magellan will showcase an enhanced Triton line-up in its booth #2177 at the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show in Orlando beginning today and running through January 18, 2009.

Magellan reinvented outdoor GPS when it introduced the Triton series by providing outdoor enthusiasts with the most advanced design and innovative features. In an effort to continue providing Triton users leading edge technology, the company has dramatically improved the Triton software to provide enhanced stability, performance and quality of the complete Triton product line.

"Magellan prides itself on developing innovative products that provide users with the best navigation experience possible," said Justin Doucette, Director of Outdoor Product Marketing for Magellan’s Consumer Product Division. "With the release of the latest Triton software, the new Triton will provide users with the kind of experience outdoor enthusiasts have dreamed of – a rugged GPS navigation device with a full-color touch screen, friendly user interface, built-in camera and media recorder to capture visited locations, and the best mapping solutions available, including access to National Geographic maps and AccuTerra branded GPS map data."

The new product update incorporates the following improvements:

User Experience: Users will now be able to enjoy enhanced features including the ability to load and search 500 waypoints, trails with 5,000 track points, and 20 routes; the implementation of the NMEA communication protocol for both USB and Serial communication; trail functionality; and improvements like the ability to select unique trail color in addition to other user-defined trail attribute definitions; and several other user interface and map display improvements.

VantagePointTM Software: Users will now be able to take advantage of a Window system trap application that alerts them of new Triton software updates. Additionally, the updated trails functionality and NMEA communication protocol are included in the latest VantagePoint software release to allow users to replay and customize their trails and perform GPS logging. VantagePoint software is available for free download at www.MagellanGPS.com/VantagePoint.

Product Accuracy: The accuracy of location information has been updated with improvements in latitude, longitude, heading, bearing, distance, date, time, elevation and speed. The accuracy of the internal memory and SD Card memory readings has also been improved.

Searching: The ability to search for waypoints, geocaches and other place destinations is a vital part of an outdoor GPS device experience. Three areas of search-related improvements are the ability to search user data; the ability to search geographically ("nearest to") a point of the map; and the ability to search for places within a map.

Sensors: Improvements have been made to the functionality and performance of the electronic 3-axis compass and digital barometer; additionally, sensors are only used when necessary, extending the battery life. Two Triton models come equipped with sensors – the Triton 500 and the Triton 2000.

PC and GPS Device Communications: A warning message to users trying to connect their Triton device to their PC for the first time will no longer be displayed as a result of an improved PC connection with certified MicroSoft Windows USB driver.

National Geographic TOPO! Explorer: National Geographic SuperQuads – a unique combination of USGS 1:24,000 topo quads, 4-meter aerial imagery and hybrid maps – are now available on Triton GPS devices through TOPO! Explorer and TOPO! Explorer Deluxe software products. New improvements include automatic Triton software updates, updated map export, complete Triton memory management for both user data and NGMaps and updated online user documentation.

Topo USA (powered by AccuTerra): Intermap Technologies branded AccuTerra GPS map data is available to Triton users for online download now, and will soon be available in popular retail outlets. The retail product will be available on "plug 'n play" SD Cards, which can be simply inserted into compatible Triton devices for instant access to national GPS maps. The vector-based interactive maps include property boundaries for federal, state, and local lands; accurate hiking and motorized trails; and over one million outdoor-specific points of interest. Both regional and complete US coverage is available.

The new software release is available for free download at MagellanGPS.com . Additional software updates with new features will be released in Spring 2009.

Press release: UPDATE 1-US trade panel bars SiRF GPS chips in patent fight

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) - A U.S. trade panel ruled on Thursday that SiRF Technology Holdings (SIRF.O) infringed on three of chipmaker Broadcom's (BRCM.O) patents for global positioning systems and barred SiRF imports of the products.

The U.S. International Trade Commission said it upheld an earlier ruling by an ITC administrative law judge that SiRF's chips infringe patents held by Broadcom subsidiary Global Locate.

The ITC also issued an exclusion order barring imports of SiRF's infringing GPS chips and products containing the chips.

Broadcom said that the ruling brought to six the number of patents that SiRF has been found to infringe. The group of patents are related to GPS processing and sensitivity.

"We are optimistic that the ITC orders will become effective after a 60-day statutory review period so that U.S. Customs may begin enforcement and prevent any further patent infringement," David Rosmann, Broadcom's vice president for intellectual property litigation, said in a statement.

Broadcom shares closed up 3.5 percent at $16.72 on the Nasdaq market while SiRF ended down 20.7 percent at $1.19.

GPS technology, which uses satellites in orbit around the earth to pinpoint locations, is used to guide the U.S. space shuttle, and for car navigation systems and other devices. (Reporting by Diane Bartz; editing by Carol Bishopric)

Press release: 16.01.09 ITC Final Determination Notice Minimally Affects Only a Few SiRF Customers

Limited Exclusion Order Applies Only to Named Parties

San Jose,CA--SiRF Technology Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: SIRF), a leading provider of GPS-powered, location-aware platforms, today announced that the International Trade Commission (“ITC”) has issued a Notice of Final Determination in Broadcom’s ITC case against SiRF. The Notice adheres to the Federal Circuit’s October 14, 2008 Kyocera decision that ITC limited exclusion orders only impact parties named in the investigation. Other than the four named customers in the investigation, all other SiRF customers are not affected.

"We are pleased that the Commission followed the Federal Circuit’s Kyocera ruling, which significantly limits the impact to our customer base," said Kanwar Chadha, founder of SiRF. "While disappointed with the Commission’s ruling as it relates to its patent infringement findings regarding SiRF’s earlier products, we continue to work closely with the named customers to conform with the Commission’s ruling and enable them to maintain uninterrupted product delivery to market."

The Final Determination is subject to a sixty-day Presidential review period and can then be appealed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (the “Federal Circuit”).
