I want to plan my route beforehand.

Sorry for being a noob, but am looking for a GPS that directs me on a pre-planned route that I've done on my PC.

None of the product specs of the cheap(ish) ones seemed to mention this capability.

I assume the bike specific systems can do this - bit beyond my pocket though - used a basic cheapo once in map pocket of my tankbag and it was fine.

Have searched the forums but none of my 'search phrases' brought up anything - sooooooooooo to the inevitable list of q's.

Is there a industry acknowledged phrase for this pre planned route thingy?

Any particular makes of GPS that usually include this capability

....or

Is it down to the software bundled with the GPS... or even the mapping sware.

You can tell I don't know a fat lot about this Rolling Eyes

- trying to learn though - I hate making un-informed purchases.

I only use it occasionally but it allows routes to be planned with Google Maps and way points to be set for download as a Tom Tom itinerary.

I see - so I'd need it to be either a tom tom device or TT software.

you use the word 'Itinary' - shall have a looksee on the forums using this as a search phrase.

No other makes? - the reason I'm asking is there are some pretty cheap post chrimbo deals on the web, tho the largest reductions appear to be on the 'other' makes - i.e. not garmin or TT

I have seen Garmins at 89 squid and they use mapsource for doing a route on pc to download . Mind they arent the waterproof ones.

Thanks for the answers so far.

Water proofing isn't the issue - I am looking for a system that I can use on my bike and car - I would put the GPS unit in my waterproof map pocket on my tank bag at the first sniff of rain were I to get a non-bike specific one.

so assuming the 550 garmins (aswell as 7xx) can also do routes, Are there any restrictions to the Tomtom ranges using the tyre prog and waypoints as in prev post?

You'd think the manufacturers would clearly describe this 'feature' if they had it Mad

The Nuvi 550 can store 10 routes. It in the spec of every unit on the Garmin website. See here under Maps & Memory - Routes:10.

nothing wrong at all with the price - that's why I quoted it.

Just that I wanted European wide mapping - looking to use it touring abroad, that's all - hence the sad face - I suppose an upgrade can be bought from Garmin.....open another tab.....GBP79.99 Shocked

. hmmmm.

Also found in PC-wld (I really wish not tho, I've no love of that particular shop) Navman S90i Europe Wide Traffic In-Car Satellite Navigation for 79.97 which seems like a lot of sat-nav for the price??

Looked at it's user manual and it allows for multi-waypoint route, but has to be inputted with the touch-screen - prob quite cumbersome - but would achieve what I wanted.

Still undecided - tho would go for the Garmin if european wide mapping was a bit cheaper

There are rumours of a Zumo 660 and in fact a banner on Garmins site talk of the new motorcycle friendly Zumo 660 and then it disappears.

The effect of this is that the current Zumo should go down in price . I have seen the Zumo 500 for £237 inc delivery.
