Not sure why Home is not giving you a more helpful error message - it usually does.
If you are trying to install on the internal memory, there may well not be enough room.
You possibly only need to delete a couple of unused voices to free up enough space, but without having your device in front of me I can't be more specific about how much space you need to create.
Alternatively, use an SD card to store the map onto.
The map should have been downloaded to your PC successfully, so once you've got the required room, it should be quick to re-install, using "Add maps, voices etc. / Items on my computer. It will probably be best to remove the folder that has been created that isn't working properly before you do this.
EDIT: Just had another thought.... You mentioned "1.9GB" and that is the size of the "Large version" Western and Central Europe map for the 910. Home should have downloaded the "2GB" version for your 720 (i.e a version for machines with 2GB of internal memory and is about 1.6GB in size).
If you can find the new folder on your PC, can you right click on it and give all the figures for sizes that Windows reports?
*If* that is what's happened, then there is no way it will fit on the internal memory and leave enough room for the core program etc., but there is still no problem if you put it on an SD card - I ran the "large" version like this for ages on my 720 after TT sent it to me by mistake.

Not sure if this will help you, but recently when installing a new map, i had trouble with the same 'you cannot use this map on your device' message. It turns out that the go 520 needs specific maps, not just any map. The western and central europe map i had tried to install had that same error message, and it turns out i needed to get 'western and central europe 2GB' map instead.
Not sure if it helps, but you might be trying to install the wrong map like i did. _________________ Tomtom GO 1005 LIVE

Thanks Andy,
I need to free up about 1.9mb but the device is new and I haven't put any extras on it yet so can't see where I can delete anything. Think I may have to go to the shops in the morning to get an sd card.

Thanks lads, a bit confused now as the map d/loaded was the one offered by the dreaded TTHome. I know it's buggy but it would never download the wrong one would it! |

Andy,
The d/loaded map is showing as Western Europe, sized at 1.63GB.

using the tomtom web site, selecting a 720/720 t model, all the usual maps get offered. The two I had trouble with appear correctly, W&C Europe 2GB and North America 2GB, but western europe doesnt appear with the 2gb suffix. Home shouldnt offer the wrong map though. _________________ Tomtom GO 1005 LIVE

That map should be fine as the "other one" is 1,94GB in size.
You could remove the "rastor" folder from the device as this contains images that are only used with the map scale zoomed out to an unusable "gods eye" view so they won't be missed - Once the new map has installed try copying the "rastor" folder back to the unit - Mike

How much space is on your device? I updated fine. When I upgraded my 720 to v8.300 Navcore it went ok. Then I did a full backup as advised first, and when TTHome downloaded the new maps it asked f I wanted to delete anything from the device as there was no space.
Have you got the latest TT Home installed?
Also try a reset of your TT720? _________________ TTG 720
