I'm not sure if this has been covered in the forum but here goes. Due to a sound hardware problem I had a 520 replaced with a newer version which included the very useful "Compass Preference" function, very useful indeed, which when Tom Tom found out about they removed when you do an update through Home. They very kindly replaced it with the tiny version that only points due north and incorporates no other information at all and was found on earlier devices.
If you contact TT they say sorry, that's the way it is, and they will send you an email to respond to so you can protest, this way it can be sent to the person or persons responsible with a view to getting it reinstated,... yeah right!! So to my question - is there a method of getting the fully functional compass back or do we have to put up with this step backwards? |

You can either use the older software with all its limitations or you can wait and hope that TomTom re-implement it.
Personally it's not a huge issue to me, I don't need a fully featured compass in a sat-nav but many do miss it. Whether there are enough to convince TomTom to change it only they will know! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Some of Nav7 compass functionality can be restored by preference--status bar--direction.
You'll now see the direction of travel in both letters (N, W, SE, etc) as well as degrees. This info is on the status bar, not the compass itself as in N7, but it is better than nothing, I suppose. _________________ David |

Later versions of software now seem to show a more solid arrow than the "outline" one that appeared when the compass was shrunk.
Looking at a screenshot somewhere (can't remember where), it looks like it's to make room for another button on the left hand side of the screen - everything else has been made smaller.
I doubt that TomTom will consider putting a decent sized compass / direction arrow on the RIGHT hand side where there's load of space. _________________ Gerry

The extra button they have added to the left side of the screen looks like a microphone and activates the speech control capabilities of the x40 range, you are quite correct the old compass wouldn't have enough room to reside in the available gap - Mike |

Any chance you can post that email text and the address so that we can send it? I keep trying to get through to TT support on their website but never succeed in getting the message sent.
I have a very good argument lined up for them, as they probably don't realise how very useful this feature used to be and how utterly useless the 'upgraded' version is. _________________ Asus zenFone Android CamerAlert

Edit: seemed to make sense to repost:
I liked the directional compass. You could set your destination and meander down little roads in the general direction of your destination.
It was also amusing when in a moutainous region (eg Alps or Pyrenees) to see that your destination is, say, 6 miles away and it is going to take you 24 miles (some in the opposite direction) to get there!
Also useful if you did not want to follow TT suggestions blindly. _________________ Alan

As I said in the earlier post the newer x40 machines use more space on the left of the screen for indications/ controls.
The original "Compass" on an x20
The 940 screen with Buddies message alert, short cut menu and Speech recognition buttons:
Look what happens if you enable the old style compass on the 940 - far from ideal as you lower part of the microphone is obscured:
I guess user chooses would be a better option, but I doubt we will get that sort of capability introduced overnight - Mike |

So it is possible to activate the old style compass? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Now I can see the usefulness of the feature in that respect, I'd never tried configuring the distance function back when it was available. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I thought it was obvious when you look at the bits from the two pictures above the combo screen shot - Mike |

I use the Buddies feature from time to time as you can send messages as well as positional data via the system, with an x40 Live its not costing you anything to use in way of data charges so why not?
Enroute to the last PGPSW Expo it was handy to see where the others were on the road so it can have its uses - Mike |
