Community participation in TomTom’s proprietary map improvement technology grows 1,000% in less than a year
16 December 2008 - TomTom, the world’s leading navigation solutions provider, today announces that members of the TomTom Map Share community have made a total of five million map updates worldwide. This milestone is the result of the rapid adoption of TomTom’s proprietary technology by the TomTom Map Share community, which has grown from half a million users at the beginning of 2008 to more than five million users today.
TomTom is able to deliver the most up-to-date maps in a changing world by enlisting the help of its users worldwide. Map Share allows TomTom customers to make improvements to their map instantly on their TomTom navigation device. Once verified by TomTom moderators, these updates are made available to the entire Map Share community, ensuring TomTom customers always have access to the most up-to-date maps.
“From the beginning, we envisioned Map Share as a tool to help drivers contend with the frustration of unexpected road changes, and to be used between map updates,” said Corinne Vigreux, managing director, TomTom. “To put this five million milestone in perspective, a one-hour trip made anywhere in Europe or North America will be influenced by twenty to thirty Map Share corrections.
“The success of Map Share is also due to the fact that the improvements made are those that customers really care about, and that the community has taken the time to report and share these corrections.”
Map Share facts:
hundreds of thousands of street names have been added
almost one million roads that were incorrectly blocked (or open) are now included or excluded from TomTom routes
Map Share users in the UK, US and Germany make the most improvements
Steven New, a delivery driver from Northumberland, is the most regular and active user of TomTom Map Share in the UK. He commented: “With roads constantly changing, Map Share has become invaluable to my driving for work, which involves around 700 miles per week. It has helped to improve the efficiency of my hectic delivery schedule considerably. Where a road name or speed limit has changed, for example, I am able to correct this immediately and benefit from it during my daily and weekly routine. I’m also able to download the thousands of improvements made by other users, and share my Map Share changes with the rest of the TomTom community, so I am also helping other TomTom customers.”
TomTom’s complete map package, which includes high quality maps pre-installed on all products, TomTom’s latest map guarantee, the TomTom Map Update Service™ and Map Share, allows TomTom to provide customers with the most up-to-date and reliable maps in the industry.
Map Share corrections are available to TomTom customers via TomTom HOME software, which comes as standard with all TomTom devices.
TomTom Map Share is certified by the German TÜV SÜD for its efficiency, intuitiveness and reliability. _________________ Robert Brady

Press release: 16.12.08 In these “Interesting Times” What ISN'T Going to Happen in 2009
NEW YORK - December 16, 2008 -
For the fourth consecutive year, ABI Research puts a different twist on the traditional December activity of surveying the year just past and speculating about what the new one will bring, with a white paper titled "What’s Isn’t Going to Happen in 2009." The paper is available for free download from the company's website.
Given the global recession, lots of things won't happen in 2009, of course. So ABI Research's analysts focused on several of the company's core areas of expertise, including mobile marketing and mobile banking, near-field communication, digital media, IPTV, transportation, navigation and location based services, mobile phones and mobile telecoms, intellectual property, Wi-Fi, WiMAX and other networks, with a special look at Asia.
Any contrarian look at what won’t happen naturally sheds light on what might. While many markets are undeniably in turmoil, there are opportunities as well as challenges, and surprising bright spots amid the gloom.
Will mobile marketing hit the big time? No; but the mobile Internet is powering ahead and creating a foundation for the future.
Will IPTV replace traditional broadcast TV? Absolutely not. But some markets are robust and some providers are prospering.
Will the “location industry” get lost? No: in fact 2009’s climate may have a bracing effect in the longer term.
With its mix of expert opinion, informed assessments, and wry humor, "What’s Not Going to Happen in 2009" makes for a lively and informative read.

Press release: 16.12.08 Networks in Motion Issued U.S. Patent for Graphical Sharing of Information
ALISO VIEJO, CA-- Networks In Motion (NIM), the award-winning wireless navigation, hyper-local search and location-based services (LBS) company with the largest mobile phone navigation subscriber base in North America, today announced that it has secured a U.S. patent related to the graphical sharing of information for mobile devices and personal computers.
“Networks In Motion prides itself on developing innovations that have the potential to revolutionize the gathering and consumption of information,” said Doug Antone, CEO and president of Networks In Motion. “We are especially proud of being issued our latest patent for graphically sharing information and how it simplifies the sharing of local and position information.”
Originally submitted to the U.S. Patent Office in 2003, the application has now been issued as U.S. Patent No. 7,271,742, entitled, “Method and apparatus for sending, retrieving and planning location relevant information.” This technology provides the means for receiving and sharing relevant location-based information using a graphical interface. This innovative process was developed to enhance the user experience within personal computers and a variety of communication devices such as mobile phones, in-vehicle navigation systems and personal digital assistants (PDAs).
In terms of actual implementation, icons representing users, friends and specific points-of-interest of the user’s choosing are graphically represented within the UI, based upon geographic location. To share the location of a new restaurant with a friend, the user simply graphically drags the graphical representation of the restaurant on top of a friend’s icon and releases. The location and directions to the restaurant can be instantly relayed to the respective mobile device. Networks In Motion’s patented technology holds unique social networking implications by seamlessly connecting entire social circles of friends and family, and it can be leveraged by today’s most popular social networking communities.
Additionally, the patented graphical interface makes it possible to manage a fleet of vehicles and distribute information with ease. For example, a local dispatcher could easily send continuously updated mapped routes, waypoints and instructions to any driver on the road simply by dragging and dropping the information over the driver’s icon.
NIM’s technology allows for creative application among consumer and enterprise markets as NIM’s customers and partners see fit. And, because of NIM’s existing infrastructure as a world-class LBS company, this technology can be easily integrated within its GPS applications and its NAVBuilder platform in order to make it easier for users to obtain information with greater speed and efficiency.

Press release: 16.12.08 VTI Technologies: Accurate Navigation Now Possible Without GPS
VTI Demonstrates Indoor Pedestrian Navigation using Sensors at CES 2009
2009 International CES
VANTAA, Finland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--VTI Technologies has announced a novel MEMS-based pedestrian navigation solution demonstrator. Making its debut at CES 2009, the small wearable device can track the position, speed and distance of a pedestrian. It relies solely on the information provided from the sensors within the device, and is thus ideal for navigating in areas when there is no GPS reception, such as indoors.
Enabled by VTI’s Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology and proprietary algorithms the system uses a VTI ultra-low power 3 axis accelerometer for computing the pedestrian's speed and distance. Drawing a mere 10µA of current this extremely low power consuming 3-axis acceleration sensor is ideal for use in small battery operated devices. The computed speed and distance information is passed on to a heading and position module which utilizes VTI's gyro technology, in addition to third-party magnetic sensor technology. The heading sensors' data, speed and distance are then transmitted over Bluetooth radio to a personal computer where the pedestrian's movements can be tracked on a map in real time.
"Sensor based navigation opens up exciting new possibilities for complementing traditional GPS navigation in situations where satellite coverage is unavailable, or where coverage so limited that the results will be inaccurate. You could e.g. extend location based services into shopping malls, or utilize it for security and sports performance monitoring applications" says Sten Stockmann, Marketing Director at VTI.
VTI will be showing this navigation demonstrator in its suite at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, January 8th through the 11th. _________________ Robert Brady

For more information, please visit http://developer.wavemarket.com.
“Trust, privacy and control are all core to Veriplace, as they have always been for the Sprint Family Locator application,” said Tasso Roumeliotis, CEO of WaveMarket. “We’re pleased to partner with Sprint to extend the huge potential of LBS to more application developers.”
Through an existing partnership, Sprint subscribers already have access to a wealth of LBS applications in WHERE. With the extension of the two companies’ relationship, third-party developers will now be able to location-enable their applications, WAP sites, Web sites and SMS campaigns through a simple Web-service API. For more information, please visit http://developer.where.com.
“We are delighted to team up with Sprint again to empower the use of network-based location in innovative new applications,” said Walt Doyle, CEO of WHERE. “As an aggregator for the Sprint network, we are extending the breadth and depth of LBS to more developers who want to create applications for Sprint subscribers.”
Web, WAP, SMS and mobile application developers can learn more about how to create applications for Sprint phones using location information by visiting the Sprint developer site at http://developer.sprint.com.
Sprint is committed to offering mobile content and applications to its customers when, where and how they want them:
Sprint has employed an open Internet approach, and the Sprint Application Developer Program has been providing tools for third-party developers since Sprint first launched the Wireless Web on its phones in 2001.
Sprint held its eighth annual application developer conference Dec. 10-12.
Through relationships with third parties, hundreds of non-Sprint-branded applications, games and other digital media may be downloaded from the mobile Internet to operate on Sprint phones.
More than 200 different non-Sprint-branded devices, from machine-to-machine to telemetry, operate on the Sprint network through a widely respected device certification process.
Sprint is a member the Open Handset Alliance, along with more than 30 other participating companies, supporting the free and open mobile applications platform named Android.

Press release: 17.12.08 Numonyx Introduces New Line-Up of NAND Flash Memories for Wireless, Embedded and Storage Applications
New Devices Target High-Density eMMC* and microSD* Solutions; Built on Advanced 41nm Technology
GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Continuing to deliver a comprehensive portfolio of NOR, NAND, RAM and PCM (phase change memory) solutions, Numonyx B.V. today launched a series of new NAND flash memory devices for use in wireless, embedded and data storage applications. These include up to 32 Gb (gigabits) multi-level cell (MLC) NAND, 32 GB (gigabytes) eMMC* and up to 8 GB microSD* products fabricated on the advanced 41nm process technology. The new products will provide manufacturers of mobile phones, personal navigation devices, and other consumer electronics with easy-to-manage and simple-to-design memory solutions and will give consumers significantly more room on their devices to store pictures, videos, songs and operate popular multimedia applications.
NAND memory continues to be one of the largest segments of the semiconductor industry, driven primarily by the high levels of digital content found in everything from set-top boxes to mobile phones. The new products announced today allows Numonyx to add leading MLC and SLC NAND, managed NAND, and NAND cards to its breadth of memory subsystem solutions – multi-chip packages, software and firmware elements – for a distinct competitive advantage.
“We have accelerated our Numonyx NAND offerings to industry-leading levels,” said Fabio Gualandris, vice president and general manager of the Data Business Group at Numonyx. “With the new 41nm technology NAND products, Numonyx will bring further value to our wireless and embedded customers, as well as eventually enter new segments specifically dedicated to data storage, with leading technology and high density memory. When combined with Numonyx NOR and cost-effective DRAM, the Numonyx NAND portfolio bolsters Numonyx into a unique position to offer the right mix of technologies at the right densities for the right application.”
Numonyx NAND: A Broad Portfolio Now Using Advanced Technology
With today’s news, Numonyx brings the advantages of the advanced 41nm technology to popular product solutions and densities many customers require. These include stand-alone and multi-chip package MLC products at densities of 16Gb to 32Gb; e-MMC managed NAND products from 2GB up to 32GB; and microSD removable cards from 2GB to 8GB. Numonyx also introduced a 48nm SLC 1Gb NAND product to better provide its embedded and wireless customers with higher performing, more secure and longer lasting memory solutions.
Meeting Needs for High-Density Managed NAND
To meet the needs of the managed NAND segment – memories with a controller function that manages basic control functions for NAND applications – Numonyx is introducing 41nm managed NAND flash memory devices. The new products are well suited for global positioning systems and other applications requiring large amounts of easy-to-manage storage. Press release: 17.12.08 NEC Electronics Extends Support for Automotive Audio and Navigation Control Systems with New 32-Bit Microcontrollers Boasting Industry’s Highest Built-In Flash Memory Capacity
New V850E/Sx3-H Microcontrollers Offer 1.5 Megabytes of Flash Memory, Improved CPU Performance and Integrated Noise-Reduction Circuitry
KAWASAKI, Japan & DUESSELDORF, Germany & SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Leading 32-bit microcontroller supplier NEC Electronics Corporation has reaffirmed its commitment to the automotive market by expanding support for audio and navigation applications with its new V850E/Sx3-H™ microcontrollers (MCUs). Based on the company’s well-established V850E1™ core, the new V850E/Sx3-H devices offer the industry’s highest flash memory capacity for 32-bit MCUs, in addition to improved CPU performance for today’s audio and infotainment systems. These improvements, together with a small 0.5 millimeter pin-pitch QFP package, make the new devices ideally suited for use in high-functionality, high-performance automotive radios, compact disc systems, DVD systems, USB/SD card readers and digital terrestrial broadcast equipment.
“In car audio and navigation systems, we are seeing a migration toward consumer electronics-based technologies such as USB, SD card and Bluetooth®, in response to growing user demands for smooth transitions between in-car and out-of-car experiences,” said Shinichi Iwamoto, vice president, microcomputer operations unit, NEC Electronics Corporation. “In turn, car manufacturers are demanding MCUs with more built-in memory capacity and lower radiated noise to support the significant increase in software that these media require. Our new V850E/Sx3-H devices enable automotive designers to meet these goals, offering industry-leading memory capacity and improved CPU performance while adhering to strict reliability constraints.”
Augmenting the company’s existing V850ES/SG3™ and V850ES/SJ3™ MCUs, the newest devices in NEC Electronics’ S Series consist of two lineups: the V850E/SJ3-H™ and the V850E/SK3-H™. In addition to 1.5 megabytes (MB) of flash memory, 1.5 times more capacity than V850ES/Sx3 devices, the V850E/Sx3-H MCUs can execute 85 Dhrystone MIPS at a clock speed of 48 megahertz (MHz), compared to 32 MHz by existing devices. These improvements allow the MCUs to store more software for system control while speeding up software execution time.
For improved reliability, integrated built-in spread spectrum clock generators (SSCG) reduce the MCU clock’s oscillation (fundamental) and higher frequencies, which helps to reduce the risk of degraded radio performance and chip errors. This also decreases the resources required to evaluate and investigate electromagnetic interference (EMI) in anti-EMI components, allowing designers to lower system development costs and shorten development time. Pin layouts and software in the new devices are backward compatible with those in V850ES/SG3 and V850ES/SJ3 models, making it easy for design engineers to leverage existing design assets to avoid incurring additional costs. Serial interface channels include eight UART channels, eight CSI channels and six I2C channels that allow designers to support a larger number of media types.
Samples of the new MCUs are available now. The six V850E/SJ3-H MCUs are available in 144-pin QFP packages. The three V850E/SK3-H MCUs are available in 176-pin QFP packages. Mass production is scheduled to begin in November 2009. Prices will vary depending on memory, package and pin configurations. For example, the V850E/SK3-H, with 1.5 MB of flash memory and 92 kilobytes of RAM in a 176-pin quad flat package (QFP), will be priced at US$20 each in 10,000-unit quantities. Pricing and availability are subject to change.
