Check one out for yourself here. I don't think that these devices are strictly legal in the UK, though. _________________ Tim |

Because they are broadcasting using frequencies which require licences. _________________ Tim |

No, at least I don't think so. This device picks up the output of whatever it is plugged in to, be it an iPAQ, iPOD or whatever, and then transmits that output to you car radio so that the sound comes through your car speakers. Of course, the device and radio have to be tuned to the same frequency, which means that you can't actually listen to the radio at the same time unless you swap between your chosen music channel and the deice channel. Using this method could cause you to miss instructions. _________________ Tim |

They (FM Re-transmitters) are illegal to use in the UK, as always with our legal system it is not unlawful to sell them though!
They are illegal because they braodcast on frequencies that require a licence (one which you won' get unless you are a commercial radio station!) from the RA or Offcom - Office of Communications as they are now known , although they are unlikely to cause a nuisance as the range and output power is limited you should be aware that if you are caught the offence carries a heavy penalty and the Offcom are infamous for always prosecuting, forewarned is forearmed as the say! _________________ Darren Griffin |

As well as been known for prosecuting they are known for confiscation, which wont just be limited to the transmiter but anything that it is been used with...PDA/MOUNT/GPS.................

You certainly won't find me using one of these devices - I value my amateur radio licence too much!
They are unlicensed and unlicensable transmitters in the UK. The UK tends to come down very harsh on any transmitting on a broadcast band; probably because of the strictness of enforcement about pirate radio. The thought of someone putting an amplifier on one of these devices is truly frightening - the harmonics in the output are likely to be dreadful.

I have just purchased from Netto's, a hands free kit for £3.99. For a bit of fun I connected it to my PDA and got a nice loud instruction from TomTom. The speaker plugs into the cig lighter and has a cig socket on the side to plug in the car charger. A mike clips over the PDA speaker and if you don't mind another thin wire it is an alternative and legal way to get that extra volume.
