Am I being a numpty or what? I have followed the somewhat confusing instructions on this site for downloading POI Loader & then downloading the database to an SD card & have got the Poi.gpi file in a garmin folder on its own. I think so far so good. When I try to install to my Kenwood unit I do it in the Where to? screen. I get a message saying 'reading data card' and then that's it. No confirmation it has loaded or anything. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? |

Hi and welcome.
It should be in a folder called Garmin/POI. |

Hi Paul
Thanks for the quick reply.
So it should be Garmin/POI/Poi.gpi?
Is it case sensitive? Does it have to be the only file on the disk?
Should I be getting a confirmation notice if it has been installed ok?
Sorry for all the questions but I've tried this several times & it's beginning to get on my nerves. |

Yes that's correct.

Not that i'm aware of.

No.

Not sure as i don't have one of these but i'd expect some sort of confirmation.

In what way is the guide confusing? As we don't have access to every device we cater for we have to base our guides on feedback from owners. If there is something incorrect then let me know and I'll correct it? _________________ Darren Griffin |

I'm using this guide:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras-kenwood.php
Under the install instructions to SD card it says to connect your card reader to your PC. It then says 'If POI Loader does not automatically start, run it now'. Why would connecting your card reader launch POI Loader automatically?
There is no mention of the folder structure that should be used on the SD card.
There is also no information on how to load onto the Kenwood unit.
I understand that you can't test on all possible units out there hence why I am asking questions on the forum. But getting the POI's onto my Kenwood is beginning to me off! |

Garmin (the Kenwood models are Garmin based) users sometimes have a program installed to their PC which detects when a Garmin unit has been plugged in and it automatically launches POILoader.

Have you tried it on the SD Card without putting it in any folders? You mentioned you'd put it in a folder called Garmin but the usual structure for Garmin units is Garmin/POI, however that might not ring true with the Kenwood units.

It's in the instructions.
Quote: | Insert CD into Kenwood unit and it will auto-update. |
We are not provided with instructions from Kenwood on how to do this and we are having to work it out as we go along too. It's not helped by the fact we don't have access to these units ourselves, and some units seem to act differently to others.

I understand but there are other Kenwood users out there who may in time be able to help. |

Thanks Paul, I guess I'll just have to keep trawling the forums & hope someone else has managed to load from SD card onto a Kenwood DNX8220BT or just keep on with trial & error myself. If I manage to sort it out I'll let people on here know how I managed it.
Cheers. |

Did you try with the POI.GPI file on the card on it's own? i.e. not in any folders? |

Using POILoader, does it place it in the root of the card by default? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Wasn't sure so just tried it. You have to specify a folder.
If you try to save the POI.GPI to the root of any drive it says.
---------------------------
POILoader
---------------------------
The path name you have entered is not a directory, please specify the directory where your POI files are located.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
Which is confusing because at this point you are being asked
Quote: | Please select a folder for saving your POI file |
and not where your POI files are.....
When i saw aemdee said in the OP "...have got the Poi.gpi file in a garmin folder on its own" i figured the instructions had been mis-read and aemdee had missed the POI folder out. I'll admit i didn't actually check the instructions that closely. |

Yeah...tried that. Had the same problem with the root directory so have tried...garmin/Poi.gpi...garmin/POI/Poi.gpi but when I insert the SD card into the unit, it only says 'reading card data' then nothing else.
Appreciate you trying guys |

One other solution might be to try a different SD card. In this thread it seems at least two people have had to try different SD cards before it would work.
Quote: | I have seen another post re a Kenwood DNX7200 where they had a similar problem that was fixed with a different SD card |
and

upload successfull. |

Well, I tried a 1GB Puremedia SD card & a 8GB Sandisk SD card & it didn't work
I inserted the card & got a message that it's reading card data but then after a few seconds it just goes back to the 'Where to?/Map' screen.
This is doing my nut in! |
