Hi
I liked the idea of the compass on previous versions I had the pointer facing the direction of travel, I have noticed on the new version that the arrow is pointing the direction I am travelling from.....I cant find the option in the settings has another stripped down setting

if I was travelling north the pointer would be down or south, I noticed it on the M56 heading west from Manchester to chester however the pointer was facing east (3pm on a clock)
it was better when it was pointing to the direction travelling towards |

The pointer apparently always points North, and that is all it will do, sadly!!
Cheers

Can you double check that with a demo route because as carl says the needle always points north confussing people when travelling east or west as it appears to be pointing the wrong way. However North and South aren't usually a problem. |

what a shame it was useful having the direction travelling towards in the USA, I also liked to see which direction I was travelling towards instead if having to work it out |

What I do to get round it (sort of) is to display the heading in the little blue box, 0(360) is N, 90 is E, 180 is S, and 270 is W!!
I still have the pointer on as well, just need to reverse it, to know your direction.
I knew I would need my Maths from school one day!! Wahey!
Still to use Mr. Pythagoras little idea though
Cheers

The functionality of the v7 compass has essentially been returned in v8.3 using the status bar option of showing direction. You will now see the direction you are driving, both in letters (NW, E, etc.) and degrees.
Mind you, you may have to delete an existing choice on the status bar to get the direction to show. I removed 'time to arrival' and kept current time and time of arrival. I can still do the math in my head.
Sorry....post above said essentially the same thing. _________________ David |

What I liked about the old compass was you could see how far away you were from your destination, shown in direct distance in the centre of the compass. If you were looking for a parking space for example and you could find one, you knew how far it was to walk from there. |

Agree with Zebb (a technique I've used myself) and sadly have to say I disagree with dhn. The compass functionality has not been fully restored just yet, although TT are moving in the right direction at least. Maybe there was a lot more functionality in the old compass than some people are aware. People used it in different ways, depending on whether they had their maps in Track Up or North Up mode, which text fields they had selected on the status bar, etc. |

Completely agree. Also v useful for meandering round country lanes.
Please email TT - the more who complain the better chance of it being restored. _________________ Alan

If only it was that easy!
Most companies are happy to have a "Contact us" option prominently at the top of their Home page, or an easy-to-find form in their "support" section.
not so TomTom....
What you have to do is:
1. Go to their website http://www.tomtom.com/ and select "support" from the tabs at the top.
2. Click on one of the green, blue or violet boxes to choose a device category.
3. Select your model from the drop-down box.
4. You now have to try to find a suitable category in the next drop-down box. I never seem to find one that is particularly relevant (there isn't one for a simple complaint or a bug report for example), but you cannot miss out this step or the rest won't work. Optionally, you can also enter a keyword in the search box.
5. That will give you a list of topics. Unless you can find one that looks really close you your problem, just pick one at random.
6. Now, scroll to the very bottom of their text and IF YOU ARE LUCKY, there will be a message saying:
Quote: |
Ask TomTom
In case you do not find an answer to your question:
contact us |
If you get this, click on "Contact us" and you'll be led through to an on-line form and be asked your software version and for some reason you MUST tell them your PC/Mac operating system, even if all you want to do is point out a spelling mistake on their website!
If you DON'T get the "Contact us" link, just go back a step using the "Back to search results" link and choose another question until you find one with the "Contact us" enabled.
Easy eh?
Don't bother trying to miss out a few steps and go straight to one of the questions listed when you first go to the page. You get the same written answer, but no contact link! |

For a comapny that makes such an easy to use device they have the crappest customer service. It seems to me they just don't care. Give them your money and they will give you a device, but don't expect any help from them if it doesn't work properly.
Thats one of the reasons I use maps and firmware from, ahem, 'other sources'.
That and them wanting me to pay nearly as much for the latest map as I paid for my 720. With all the map corrections I send in, they should be paying me! _________________ Asus zenFone Android CamerAlert

You can also see it from the other direction. They sell an easy-to-use bit of kit that works out of the box. It's only when you want to do extra things like updating maps, taking a FULL backup etc that people start having problems. You have to remember that most users who get as far as using forums are the ones who are likely to do the extra things.
By the way, my suggestion that they bring back the old compass has been passed to the black hole they call "2nd line support". Has anyone EVER had a reply from that team?
PS I was a 2nd line engineer for 10 years who was expected to speak to customers every day. _________________ Gerry

Geez......
The next thing you'll expect is that TT actually TESTS the software prior to release ... _________________ David |
