Sorry if this has been covered - I did a search, but couldn't find anything...
My trusty Go packed up after two years - sound died to a whisper, and TomTom support didn't have any suggestions apart from an RMA return - so I decided £100 at Halfords for a ONE Version 3 Europe was unmissable (the Go cost me £250 two years ago...) I was shocked on getting it home to find that it doesn't include a mobile camera database (which I absolutely relied on with my Go) and, even worse, apparently no way of geting one. I know, I know - caveat emptor and all that...
So my questions are:
a) Does the downloadable database from PocketGPS include mobile and SPECS and red light cameras for the UK?
b) Does it work with the TomTom One Version 3?
c) Does it come with 'sensible' voice warnings (e.g. 'Warning - GATSO ahead') instead of the bizarre selection of sounds you get with the ONE out of the box?
d) Is it easy enough to install? Any tips/warnings?
I really appreciate any help anyone can give. Thanks in advance. |

Hello Ian, I just want to confirm what Mike has said.......The most reliable part of the TomTom is the PGPSW camera database! It is very accurate and has never caused any problems such as those experienced by people using phones and FM transmitters etc. etc.
I promise you, it will be the best £19.00 that you ever spend. _________________ TT Go 720 (T)

Tom/Mike: that's fantastic - I really appreciate your quick and knowledgeable replies. What's even better is to know that, once I've shelled out my £19 - if things should go pear-shaped, it looks like there's some friendly experience I can call on. Many thanks guys. Best, Ian. |

Sorry, guys, it's me again...
Time has been short, so I haven't made much progress on this since the other day, except for backing up my TomTom.
However, I got to thinking (always dangerous...) and have a couple of questions.
I know enough about PCs to be dangerous, and it occured to me that unless I was careful, I would end up with two sets of safety camera information - the one supplied, and the one from PocketGPSWorld. Not only could that potentially cause confusion as a minimum, but problems as a maximum. It also occurred to me that having two safety camera databases might give me some space issues. I did a little research and chanced upon the tutorial here:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-removal-of-tomtom-cameras-tutorial.php
That seemed fine - but my TomTom Home doesn't list the camera database as a separate entity - I just have the application, a large map file, POI, voice and postcode databases and some images. Do I have a problem I need to work round?
And, second question. What I need to download is here?
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras-tomtom-ov2.php
And I should follow these instructions to the letter?
And it sounds like I should choose the 'UK Speed Zoned' option? (Why wouldn't I? Is there a potential space issue? I see I have 77MB free on my TomTom.)
Your help is much appreciated. Cheers, Ian. |

Yes go for the speed cameras zone complete !
Regarding to sets of cameras on your sat nav you should be able to disable the Tomtom through the sat nav menu and remove at a later date.
The pocketgps sat nav camera data base will just overwrite itself on each installation!!.
I believe you can remove the tomtom ones through tomtom home |

Depends, I have a Safety Cameras Section in 'Remove items' don't you? If not then maybe you don't actually have TomTom cameras installed?

Space is unlikely to be an issue, our camera database consumes a few hundred kilobytes at most, you have 77 Megabytes of space so much more than is required. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks guys. Have I discovered something weird - hae TomTom started to do things differently? I'm sure that safety cameras do not appear as a separet entity in TomTom Home, but I'll double check this evening. And yes, they're definitely installed - I'm definitely getting warnings when approaching GATSOs or red light cameras. |

OK, so here's what I've found. TT Home shows that afety cameras are indeed in the POI folder. It doesn't seem to make any distinction in terms of the different kinds of camera. (All the safety cameras for Europe are also in there). So, it looks like I can remove the TomTom safety cameras, which is good.
I note in Windows Explorer that this seems to translate into three files, all of which are in the 'Western Europe 1GB folder:
Safety_Cam_UK_TomTomOv2.ver
Safety_Cam_UK_TomTom.ov2.dct
Safety_Cam_UK_TomTom.ov2
The last one is a 106kb file - the others are 1k.
So: does it look like I have a basis for moving forward? |

You have found the TomTom Safety Cameras so just copy them to your PC in case you ever want to try them again then use Windows Explorer to delete the files off the device - Mike |

Thanks Mike. And then, when I download the database from PocketGPSWorld, presumably I'll get three files with the same names to replace the TomTom ones with? And then I need to install - I guess - the necessary graphics/images and warning voices? |

Ian, the PocketGPSWorld database files contain two files per POI category:
pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.bmp the icon
pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.ov2 the actual locations
Optional ogg audio files for the spoken alerts:
pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.ogg Click Here
Optional larger custom icon pack:
pocketgps_uk_gatso_30_X2.bmp Click Here
Note in each example above I only used the Gatso 30 camera as an example, depending upon your choice of download you will have far more files than just the one.
You will notice the .dct file is missing from the downloads from this site, the .dct files are related to the TomTom Saftery Cameras and are not required - Mike |

The only confusion here is that although TomTom's own speed camera files are indeed still found in the same place as the other POI files, and used to be accessed in the same way as any other POIs; ever since version 6.510 software (September 2006) they are handled differently on the Go itself.
On that software and more recent versions, you will not find any mention of them in the "Manage POIs menu, nor will you see them listed.
TomTom decided to re-write their software to "split out" the camera files and deal with them in their own sub-menu - under the "TomTom Plus Services" menu. This is where you need to go if you want to disable them to stop yourself getting double warnings, without actually deleting them.
However, if all you want to do is delete them, you can definitely just remove the files mentioned with Windows Explorer as discussed. |
