|
|
I am off to the Caribbean in a few weeks and am hoping to take my GPS and Memory Map with me but I am struggling to convert some maps for use on MM. Converting them to 8 colour png files that will load ready for calibration is awkward to say the least.
Has anyone already done this to save me the work?
If not, is anyone a whizz with map conversion and calibration that could give me some guidance on a suitable tool for converting a map ready for calibration? |

You should be able to save as 8-bit .png files with most image editing software - I use Photoshop Elements.
A way to calibrate it to use Google Earth - find some landmarks on each map - headlands, crossroads etc - and use Google earth (which is always WGS84) to find the Latitude and Longitude that you can then input into calibration. Depending on your MM licence if you download the European version of 5.1.3 that contains a map calibrator that is hidden in the OS version. Otherwise use GPSU (www.gpsu.co.uk) or Map calibrator(www.GPSTuner.com) and I can send you a pre-beta version of a program to convert the .gux or .gmi to .jpr for MM |

Thanks for your comments, I am happy with the calibrating, I have managed it before. Its getting a png file that MM will recognise that I am struggling with. I have tried a few paint packages with a save as png option but this doesnt get me a file that MM recognises. I assume its the 8 bit colour that I am not getting right. |

The "Save for Web" function in Photoshop Elements allows you to specify 'png-8' and that works fine |

Or download GIMP and use Image/Mode/Indexed and then convert to 256 colours then save as png |

Why are you restricting yourself to .png ?
Memory Map can read tiff and jpg as well, I used tiff when I wanted to calibrate some Norwegian Maps.
Cheers
