|
|
Hi,
Before switching to the Garmin 760 I used TT5 on a small Mio PDA (168). While driving along the TT5 always kept up with the cars position so if I passed a road, say on the left, as the car passed the road TT would show the arrow at the exact same place. I have noticed that the 760 shows the car to be just slightly behind on the map which is not a problem normally but can be confusing in a built up area with loads of turnings very close to each other.
I have tried running the garmin in all map modes & set the detail to least just to see if that made any difference but it does not.
Is this slight lag normal ? & if not can I do anything to speed up the mapping at all.
Cheers all |

This has been reported a number of times previously and is more noticable when using the unit without a route planned, AFAIK there is no way to alter this - Mike |

Same with my i3 and 760. i3 was spot on and the 760 lags badly, even with a route planned. On a couple of occassions it's caused me to miss turns where there are several turning in quick succession.
Also annoying for spotting cameras too. |

So I am not alone then.
It's a little disapointing |

Just a thought and probably a red herring but.... I was fiddling around with My Mio 710's internals with some software and changed the STARlll chipset output from NMEA to SIRF. MioMap and other software still worked but showed quite a positional delay. It also seemed to be doing a lot of speed smoothing, as that also lagged quite a bit (about 10 seconds or more) |

I have had the same problems with my units so I use different SD cards.
In the UK I use a SD with only the UK, and this speeds up the redraw considerably. The smaller the total map tiles - the better. You can get the whole of UK onto 256MB cards.
When I go to Europe I put in the whole of my trip onto another SD card.
It seems a waste to load the whole of Europe if you rarely go to more than a few Countries!
This procedure is vital in the large Cities and could/should eliminate your problems of slow redraw. |

That would have worked on my Mio using the SD card but the Garmin 760 has all the maps built in unless someone knows different ?.
If I can't solve it I will have to go with TT again. |

I tried a route last night and again even with the route planned it lags badly. However i noticed it's not so bad when crawling through slow traffic. I believe it's more to do with the the slower refresh rate of the Garmin unit that any lag as such. |

I can totally agree with the points and concerns expressed above. This weekend i was touring around the Bury,Oldham,Rochdale,Greater Manchester area with my daughter looking for a new car and i must say i was very close to tossing this unit out of the window.
While travelling through all of these cities on a planned route through street turns, filter lanes etc the spoken directions are OK ish but the mapping is totally useless and lags behind for 5-10secs or just completely stops for 20-30 secs causing countless U turns and recalculations and adding 1 hour at least to my day and causing my bp to go ballistic!!!.
Could this problem now be solved by software update or is the unit useless and only fit for the bin.
Is this only a problem with the 760 or is any other Garmin model affected?.
Does this fault occur on any TomTom units? As i was looking to ditch this unit for a more reliable unit,Garmin or TomTom?.
P.S My760 is 1year old at xmas.
Any help much appreciated

Colin64 - What firmware are you using?
There are some problems with some of the more recent firmware which the latest cures.
Also i find the lag isn't so noticeable if you zoom out a bit more. |

PaulB
My unit has not had the firmware up dated since purchased and has currently got version 2.50,GPS SW version 3.00s.
I noticed 4.20 is available for it.
Do you think that an update will cure the problem of lag?
Not sure zooming out is the answer as i wanted more detail especially when in the city and lane changes, filtering etc is required thats when upto date map detail is needed in my opionion.
Help much appreciated

All sat nav will lag to a degree because they won't know where you are until you are there and then it has to calculate and plot the display and then display it. By the time it's done that you've moved, so you get the lag. The rate at which the screen updates also adds to the lag effect and Garmins aren't the fastest screens.
It's always worth updating to the latest firmware to iron out any bugs, but you'll never loose the lag. It may make it better, it may not change anything.
I've also seen evidence the receiver in the 7x0 series is less sensitive than the older 6xx series so that'll also add to the lag. |

If you have the GARMIN mapping DVD you can create a 'stand-alone' map of the UK on an SD card then disable the main mapping in the system by un-checking it on the screen that shows you which mapping is present. DO NOT DELETE THE FILE!
FWIW My 660 has never shown much lag. It's virtually spot on with planned routes and shows a slight delay at junctions in non-planned tracking. This is to be expected as the 'lock-to-road' feature needs to determine which road you are actually following. I do find that using 2D track-up is much faster and, for me, provides a much easier to follow map. The 'psuedo' 3D hinders visually accurate placement in busy environments (lots of junctions i.e city centres) leading to missed turnings.
I've not tried one of the systems with 'realistic' 3D building images but I am fairly sure I would find this even more distracting (as well as adding to the processor loading and screen slowness) _________________ Phil |

By saying lesss sensitive do you mean it is not one of the flip up recievers such as seen on 6xx models. The 7xx models are in built, come to think of it that may be the problem. Not part of this section of the forum but TomTom,s x30 and x40 serious have built in recievers, anyone know if they suffer from lag?
Thanks

I think he may be referring to the absolute sensitivity of the chipset in the 7xx. This may account for a higher positional error - but I would expect by the law of averages that it would sometimes have the position infront of where you are.
Simple check would be to see how many sats you are receiving (GPS Status) when this happens. With the 660 I usually get 6-7 locked stats and quite often 9.
I think the lag is just the delay in the calculation and plotting speed. _________________ Phil |
