Upgrading OS - Older HP hx4700

I want to upgrade TomTom, so I can get newer maps. (I have 5.21 now) In order to do this I must upgrade Winduhs Mobile to a newer version.

What I am gathering is that I can't install WM6.1, as that rompaq doesn't exist. I also gather that any OS upgrade must be specifically for the 4700.

This iPaq is just what I need and the hardware is excellent, so I don't want a new PPC. Am I trapped into using only WM5? Is it possible to still buy it? Is there no other choice?

If you still have the WM2003SE OS on your 4700 then leave it well alone, the WM5 update is not good for the 4700 as it slows it down too much.

You should still be able to run newer software on the 4700 but forget TomTom Navigator, the latest maps available for the PDA software are around 2 years old so they are out of date, look at other packages for more upto date mapping such as I-Go, McGuider, Co-Pilot etc - Mike

Whoah. Thank you Mike. WM2003SE has been fairly spastic for me, staying in a loop even when I turn it off, running down the battery, leaving BT on even when off, etc. Must soft-reset at least every couple days. I was hoping WM5 is better, but apparently not.


I didn't realize the maps are 2 years out of date. I've been reading that TT bought TeleAtlas, and that NavTeq is more current, but this is egregious. We've suspected for a long time that TT is abandoning us with PDAs, and now it seems to have happened. So reluctantly I must say Bye, TomTom.

Never heard of I-Go, but will check it out. Read here that McGuider is inferior and difficult to re-route with, etc. Have used Co-Pilot before and it was acceptable. These two are now on my shortlist; any further recommendations welcomed.

And meh, I don't like Co-Pilot's screen presentation as well as TT.

Maybe I'll just pirate TT7 for now, to at least get newer maps than I have.

Ehrm, I hear ya!

I never pirate software, except in extreme circumstances when forced. And I believe this qualifies.

I am reading though of the 7.20 maps being slow. I guess I'll find out.

Hang on a sec... how can there be 7.20 maps for North America? Wasn't the only TTv7 release in Germany?

Unless the same maps used in All-in-Ones can be used?

And, has anyone run WM6 on the 4700?

Sorry for the late posting _ just pop in here occasionally.

I have WM6 on my HX4700, it looks fine, but, to be honest I have not use it much as I tend to use an HTC advantage more.
