Magellan is a well known series of handheld GPS Receivers, many people ask if it's possible to load a particular map to a Magellan Handheld GPS. The answer to this is YES, but you cannot load just any old map that you have scanned, you have to purchase and upload various Magellan based product maps.

Please check out the following article for more detail on adding maps to Magellan Handheld GPS Receivers.

Forgive me for stating this here (moderator - is it ok to mention the next bit)

A digital map that renames M1 as E13 the M62 as E20 is worth a body swerve n'est pas?

Considering the number of GPS mapping packages around, the Magellan equipment seems very limited. i.e. You see to be restricted to using their own products, which seem to be very thin on the ground for the UK.

Although I bought my SporTrak Pro last summer, it's only now that I have started thinking about adding maps.

So basically you are saying that none of the packages Anquet / Fugawi / Memory-Map / Tracklogs can upload any map to my GPS?

Hmmmmmm - not very satisfactory, to say the least!! Crying or Very sad

Funnily enough, I just got a message today telling about the "Magellan MapSend Topo - UK Ordnance Survey Mapping". The listed price is £110.60 and the link I got was: http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/viewprod.php?product_id=2058&cid=44

It's as if someone was reading my mind....!?

Well, the next thing is, who's going to try it out and let us know how it performs?

Oh... re connecting to a PC. I had no trouble with that. I use Easy GPS and it works a treat. Mind you, the physical connection is a bit Heath Robinson!

I bought the software a couple of weeks ago. it performs very well, and seems to be accurate, which was my major concern. the map transfer to gps is easy as are routes/waypoints to the p.c. it says it's O.S. enabled, but thats about it, detail is scant, but the addition of contours and elevations to my sportrak color is a great bonus. Is it worth the money? no. but it's a definite improvement, and you can't upload any oher maps to magellan gps'. the one real bugbear for me was the positional readout as you move the cursor across the map, it only displays lon/lat coordinates. as this is supposed to be O.S. enabled, O.S. grid references would have been nice. magellan did try to tell me that this was possible, but then said it wasn't after i asked them to explain how! I am very pleased with it, it's just very basic for the price. a software update is in order i think, to change the lon/lat read out to OSGB grid referencing, so pull your finger out magellan!

A good twelve months on, and the mapsend topo-uk software is all but redundant except from loading the regions where I'm going onto the magellan sportrak colour, so I can get the topo info onboard.
I mainly use GPSU as a planning/management program because I can scan OS maps which show ALL the info of where I'm going, and not just part of it. Also, I can get an OS grid reference from the cursor in GPSU.
to be fair, the mapsend stuff is quite accurate, and plans on well calibrated maps on GPSU correspond almost exactly with the Magellan unit and the mapsend softwares topo info.
I stand by my original analysis, it's basic and overpriced. but I can't imagine using the sportrak colour without it!

I too have Mapsend Topo, and its great for use with the Sportrack colour as you say.

Problem is that after I moved house I have mislayed the disk. I have found the box and disk case, but no disk.

Is there any chance that some kind soul could burn me a copy?

This is a genuine request, I am happy to send a blank disk and cover return postage. I could even send the empty box as proof that I did buy the software originally.

Please help, I am feeling very "lost" (pun cringe) without it.

I have tried to make a backup copy of this software since the day I bought it, and all attempts have failed. I assume this is a deliberate attempt by magellan to eliminate pirate copies. If you figure it out let me know!

Difficult to fidure out without a disk ;)

Have you tried making an ISO image of it? That usually gets a perfect copy.

Its a plugin for Windows XP and is available here http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm

Hi, I have a fairly good burning program called NERO that can make ISO images, but it still doesn't work. I'm running ME otherwise I'd try your suggestion.

It is indeed certainly possible, but to be honest, I really haven't got the time!

Appreciate the time constraints - thanks for the replies.

Good News! - looked in an old notebook and there was the disk. - Seems uncopyable though!

Thanks all the same.
