A quote from this website - http://www.gumball144.com/google-geo/
Quote: | The use of multiple Garmin GPS units - each recording a section of our tracks cross-country - and these tracks’ seemless export into Google Earth |
Can this be done with a normal Garmin GPS device? if so... how can you record a route you have driven?
Im lost
Can anyone help? :P[/quote] |

Depends on what you mean by 'normal'
Most GPS receivers for outdoor activities (eg GARMIN GPS60, Colorado, Oregon, eTrex....) can record a tracklog (i.e. position and altitude logged at a pre-defined interval) of trips/walks etc to memory. These can be downloaded and processed to plot onto Google Earth / MemoryMap etc... They can also be used to geo-reference photographs taken by your digital camera (as long as you set the camera time correctly).
If you are talking about car-based navigation (e.g the nuvi and streetpilot series) then this facility tends to be missing. Newer TomTom devices have this facility I believe.
I think the lack of this facility is in part based on the belief that the mass-market users wouldn't use this facility where as the outdoor user does. _________________ Phil |

You can do it with a 760 (and presumably an 8xx as well).
I recently completed a tour of Europe, recording my route as I went. The 760 has enough capacity in it's tracklog feature to record a total of about 11 hours, before it starts to record new data over the oldest data.
To make sure that I didn't lose any information I downloaded the tracks each day to a laptop.
I use a freely downloadable utility called GPicSync to both Geotag my photos and to create a .kml file which I can then view in Google Earth, complete with the photos that I have just Geotagged. |

All the Garmin models that support multi-point routing offer the tracklog function AFAIK. _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr. |

I must replace my 660! Then I would know about these things. A quick look at the user manual for the 7xx devices didn't reveal this info - I guess it's another of the GARMIN "hidden" features _________________ Phil |

One of the new 7x5's would make a worthy replacement _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr. |
