I'm in the market for a new DSL modem/router. I don't need WLAN as I use an Apple Aiport to serve the wireless link.

At the moment my ADSL Router/Modem is a Linksys WAG54GS but it has a soft ON/OFF switch so if I'm away and the power is interrupted the modem doesn't come back on-line, very annoying!

So what I need is a good reliable modem/route that will auto start after mains failure, WLAN not necessary but if it can be disabled then ok, support for a USB connected device such as an external HDD would be nice. Firewall obviously.

Any suggestions?

Personally anything Belkin then NetGear.

I've never had a problem with routers not restarting after power failure. Often i advise people with a frozen link to just pull the mains plug for 2 minutes and plug back in - i never mention switch's or on / off buttons. Most routers now come on as soon as the power is applied or they have a power switch that stays in until pressed again. Even my old Buffalo router switches on with the mains as all my PC equipment is on one multi socket thingy and one flick of the switch starts the cable modem, router and monitor. All i then have to do is press the power button on the PC.

USB Device Support I'll have a look for.

Most, if not all, routers now have NAT Firewall as standard.

Cheers Paul, indeed the power issue was not one I had ever come across before but it's a fact with mine and it would appear a number of other recent Linksys devices, madness given it has support for remote access etc, not much use if the damned thing is off!

I'll swing by PCWorld later and see what they have in stock.

Belkin F5D8635uk4A RRP £99.99 Available in the UK and Europe: Oct/Nov

Quote:
Belkin's N+ Wireless Router features a USB Storage port on the back of the router for connecting USB storage devices such as an external hard drive or thumb drive to the network.

Product Bulletin

Quote:
Belkin has identified the following hard drives are not compatible with the N+ Wireless router.

List of Incompatible Hard Drives
LaCie d2 Quadra 1 TB; model number: 301827U
LaCie d2 Quadra 320 GB; model number 301108U

Will have to check the power button but i can't remember seeing a Belkin or a NetGear that had a soft power button. Usually came on with the mains or had a power switch / button that once pressed stayed "on". However should always check first....

Whist there are undoubtably many knowledgeable people on this forum, you could do worse than look at the router reviews on

I did look at that site earlier. Unless I'm missing something, apart from one review dated Feb 2008, the others are 3+ years old?

You're right! my apologies, back in the early days of Broadband I used to use the site almost daily, but I've only browsed the forums lately.

No apology needed, they were my first thought so I was surprised to see there had been little new added of late.
