|
|
I've had a Nuvi 760 on loan from Garmin for the summer. Functionally identical to the 710 in all respects other than map coverage, Text To Speech (TTS) and the colour of its case, the Nuvi 760 sits towards the top end of the extensive Nuvi model line up.
Like the 710, the 760 uses the 4.3" screen and has TMC Traffic and FM Transmitter amongst its features. Where it differs from the 710 is in its inclusion of a full Western Europe map and Text to Speech (TTS). Instead of 'Turn right in 500 meters' you get 'Turn right onto High Street' which is a useful addition.
As we took a close look at the Nuvi 710 back in February (see here), I've opted to write my findings as a supplement to that review adding own opinion of some key areas rather than re-hash all that has been covered previously.

An excellent appraisal if I may say so!
I purchased a 760 after having used both TomTom Go Classic and TomTom Navigator previously.
I was impressed by the quality of the hardware, but the R2D2 voice grated on me I am afraid. I also found that the information that I need, while holding the steering wheel, such as next junction etc, was just not there, but buried in different layers.
Suffice to say, it got sent back after two days and exchanged for the TomTom 720T, which, IMHO, even with the mapping and software niggles is the better option of the two. _________________ TT Go 720 (T)

A well balanced review.
I have a Nuvi 760 and would agree with all points raised.
My previous was a Navman 510. with this unit, you could 'flick' a switch on the side to get the unit to repeat the last instruction, a simple but effective feature. I would have liked to have seen this on the Nuvi.

Is there a bit of a Freudian slip in the article? The Garmin Forum link at the bottom of the page goes to:

Not Freudian but a typo on my part, now corrected! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Has anyone any experience of this unit as fitted to Volvos? Specifically, regarding the integrated dashboard mount (with the absence of trailing wires)? I've been told that the Volvo unit is "set up slightly differently" to standard 760's. In what way?? |

It has an integrated dashboard mount Oh and a Volvo branded splash screen and Volvo dealer POI.
Otherwise it is identical to other 760's. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Does anyone make a CAR GPS that is any good?
I have had Garmins, TomTom, RoadAngel and all have let me down.
Poor maps, gimic mapshare features that don't correct anything, new maps that are worse than old maps, dashboard mounts that are fit for nothing.
Have all the makers now cut so many corners to keep the price down that they are all crap?

I'm more than happy with my TomTom 520. Offers all that I require from a satnav. Yes it has some gimmicks that I could live without but as a satnav it performs ably.
Maps will never be perfect but the issues they suffer have never prevented me from being navigated to my chosen destination.
The same can be said of many other devices from Garmin, Navman, Navigon etc. None are perfect of course but I'm sure the silent majority are more than happy with their devices. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Quote: | Conclusion
I wanted so much to like this device. I started off my GPS career with a military Garmin unit and have been a Garmin user for many years. The Nuvi 760 is a good unit let down by some key issues that I couldn't live with. Although I accept that for the average user it may be a perfectly good solution the poor mount is inexcusable and lack of configuration options is disappointing in a high-end model such as this. |
Darren, if it isn't asking too much, I would be curious to what "Let Downs" you noted that you couldn't live with, and what comparative units have those features you could live with.
Thanks ahead of time.
