930 speaker problem

I have just purchased a TomTom 930 and have been suffering a few issues. the first was the GPS position being out by a significant position. I have posted this in a different message and it appears it is not just my unit but many people have suffered the same meaning it is probably not a fault with the hardware. Satisfied with this, yesterday I was alarmed when the voice directions (Kate) made the speaker sound like it was blown. Whenever Kate spoke, the screen also dimmed. Looking at the unit, I was running on battery only (first time I have done that) and it was working fine for most of the journey. I switched off and back on but got the same result with almost every instruction. It sounded like the speaker was being over driven and it distorted and crackled always with the screen dimming at the same time. Looking further I saw that the battery was very low. I charged the unit overnight and have been testing it all day today with no issue. Is this an issue that occurs if the battery goes low and cannot support both speaker and screen? Unfortunately I didnt think of the battery at the time or else I could have plugged in power and seen if it corrected the issue. Has anyone else had a similiar issue? The unit is less than a week old but unfortunately I bought it on the internet meaning ages without it if I try for an exchange so I dont really want to go through that unless I have to. At the same time i dont want to go too long otherwise it will just go for a repair rather than exchange. i got smoe great response from the GPS fix post and that one appears to still be rolling on so I am hoping you guys can come to my rescue again. I have to say, for a £400 piece of kit, I am somewhat disappointed at the moment. I purchased a 520 Go for work and it has been superb. Thats what you get if you go for the top end... I do it every time, and get caught out to boot!

The real answer is to never run it without external power. It also harms the li-on battery in these devices to keep running them down. They're best always kept fully charged. Mine is always in its cradle when not being used or plugged into the car socket. The only times it is on internal power is when I'm using it in my hand to pre-programme routes etc..

Thanks for the reply. I wouldnt usually do this, as in run without external power. I think I had just had a few small journeys together but the fact that I use bluetooth would have put extra stress on the battery. Are you aware if the battery rundown would cause the issue I describe iwth the speaker and display? I would have liked the unit to warn about battery sooner and shutdown before power was an issue. I just want to make sure there isnt an actual fault on my unit given its recent purchase but I have been using all weekend without any repeat so hopefully I am ok. Thanks again for your reply.

Use without the charger connected will cause the issues you describe in the original post, I wouldn't think there is anything wrong with your device at all, they all behave this way when denied connection to a power source, they supply the charger for a reason and it should be used at all times.

The power warning screen can typically be seen for a few seconds prior to the device shutting down, it is more a reminder that you need to charge the device rather than the battery alarm, which is a separate smaller indication on the display (small flashing battery symbol in red) - Mike
