|
|
So, encouraged by the good reports here of how much RDS-TMC was improved with Navcore 8, I splashed out and bought an aerial (latest type, 4v00.013) for my 520 (which I'd updated to Navcore 8), about 6 weeks ago.
Since then I've put in a couple of thousand miles travelling to various parts of the UK (London, Cornwall, Manchester, Edinburgh) from Sunderland. And throughout that time I've used the aerial.
On the basis of this experience I can say that, IMO, RDS-TMC in the UK is absolute cr** and my purchase of an aerial was a complete waste of money.
It fell down on both reception (it only seemed to get a signal about 1/3 of the time overall) and on the accuracy and timeliness of the information even when it had a signal (on the one hand spurious warnings about things that didn't slow me up and on the other major hold-ups unreported).
If, having read my rant, anyone still wants an aerial, they can have mine for a tenner inc postage!
PS: One thing which I have found is very good for up to date traffic info is the DoT Traffic program on the radio. AFAIK this is only available on DAB, but on the basis of my experience with it over the last 4 months (since I got my new car ) a much better way to spend your money ... _________________ Brian Abbott

Have had the pleasure of using mine (RDS-TMC) for the last 5 weeks (approx 3,000 miles) while I waited for TT to fix a server issue stopping my traffic subscription working. I think your assessment is bordering on generous! Although I got reception for most of the time, it was still pointless as it pretty much failed to warn me of any real jams.
For what it is worth, I have been using the traffic subscription service for several years (since launch) and think i is pretty good - certainly not 100%, but I have driven best part of 200,000 miles with it so have had time to form an opinion.
Good luck in finding a happy mug to take yours! _________________ TT 930T and Traffic subscription

I've got a RDS-TMC aerial and used it this weekend on a trip to Somerset and it worked pretty well, not brilliantly.
I warned me of a queue just after the Countess Roundabout at Amesbury, but oddly didn't offer me a diversion! So got stuck for 10-15mins.
However on the way back for a 2min delay it did!
But as I approached the diversion it cancelled it
So I guess I'll have to wait another 3 weeks when I go back again to give it another test. |

Well I am going to sell it for you.
I use it all the time & on a recent trip to northern Ireland Via Scotland coming from the south coast of Hampshire I had a constant signal & although I ignored the few warnings I got the delay information was pretty accurate. I have used the diversion option before & as far as I can see it all works very well, for me anyways.
Nothing is perfect but this free to use traffic system works for me so as it's so bad I will take it off your hands for free & sell it on ebay because I'm sure many will find it as good as I have |

Well said - since the release of Navcore 8 for the x20s I have had the best RDS-TMC service since the product (RDS-TMC) was launched.
Reception is pretty good (once you either find the correct position or connect to your car aerial) and the info has been comparable to the GPRS service (I still had a subscription until a month or two ago) as I have compared them side by side.
I have been a detractor of this in the past, but now I am happy with the functionality, but it has been a long journey to get here.

Like I said, my experience was a) often no reception and b) when there was, the info was so inaccurate as to be useless. But, if it works for you, fine.
And just to add for anyone reading, it has been sold - a total of 6 people PMd me - rather more than I'd expected! _________________ Brian Abbott

We've just travelled the length and breadth of the country, got perfect reception 98% of the time and received numerous traffic information with lane closures and traffic queues. I have the auto redirect on but it did not redirect us once as the delays were less than 5 minutes. It did recalculate the route a number of times but obviously calculated that the diverted way was longer than sitting in a queue for a few minutes. I would think that unless the delay is substantial then you are unlikely to get redirected as the A and B roads can be long and winding.
Overall, I am very pleased with the performance. |

Just come back from a trip to the South of France, 1400 miles over there altogether and it was useless. I got told of delays that didn't exist and not told of those that did. There were quite a few delays going down, half the time the signal was weak as well.
Overall impression - rubbish _________________ GO 750 LIVE v9.430 - v8.753612 EU map

scubaalan wrote Quote: | I got told of delays that didn't exist and not told of those that did | I had the same using TT Traffic in France in July but then came home to a huge mobile phone bill. So I've bought the latest TMC-RDS based on the posts that said it works well with v8.10.
Now I'm getting worried that I've wasted yet more cash. _________________ TT Go Essential |
