If you connect the Go to the PC, can Windows recognise it as a new disk drive?

Hi,
Amazingly last night I plugged him into the PC again and the screen turned on. I quickly restored the old map info etc from my backup and now he's working as before.

However i've got the problem now of being out of space so cant update anything.

When it said earlier in this topic that a 512 meg sd card would do fine, but make sure it reads quickly enough, what did that mean?
Would something like this suffice do you think?

This one would be better.

It's faster, cheaper and bigger. Shocked

I had the identical card in a GO Classsic and it's still in use today.

2GB means that you should never get the message that 'there is not enough room'.

Hi Oldboy, ta for your reply.

Card price looks great.
My Go 300 is over 3 years old though, do you think the in built card reader will be sophisticated enough to recognise the new SD card?

A 2GB card will be fine in the older devices, it is 4GB and above that would be problematic as they tend to SDHC rather than plain SD - Mike

The Classic GO is now over 4 years old and still going strong. Smile

Hi,
My 2gig card arrived today. However, without a card reader how can I transfer the data from the backup on my PC to the new card?

When I turn on my tomtom with the new card in and connected to my PC, nothing happens. ie the screen doesnt come on and the device is not seen in explorer.
Does this mean I cant upgrade to the latest version nor download any maps without an SD Card Reader? Sad

I would seriously consider investing in a card reader - they are inexpensive and considerably faster and easier to use than cards via satnavs / PDAs etc. My last one - it claims to be a "21-in-1" reader which it may be - but it has 4 slots, was obtained for £5 on top of an order for my 4Gb card for my camera.

If your TT unit relies on the card being in to run then this would be the only alternative.

When you put a new card in you should still see something on the screen. Even if it's telling you to take the card out. Confused

Try a Reset, and see if it then starts up. If it does, and tells you to take the card out, connect it to the PC and see if it's there now.

A slightly misleading reply that...

Simon.. your Go SHOULD work as a card reader itself when the new card is inserted.
Obviously it won't work as a sat-nav with the raw card in it but Windows SHOULD recognise it as a new hard drive and let you copy and paste files to and from it just like any other drive.

So we need to work out why it isn't....

TomTom have a quite good page for the three main connection to PC problems HERE. Number 1 or 3 should give you some pointers.

If you put the original card in, does windows recognise it then?
When you connect the USB cable and switch on the Go it's screen should say "Do you want to connect to 'computer' ".
It should also do the same thing with the new card.

Andy_P I agree my reply could be misleading - but Simon1969 had already stated that he can't see the new card when inserted into the TT unit.

You can select either the UK&ROI map for £29:95, or go for the Western Europe Map at £49:95 both these prices are currently discounted by £10, you will probably need a new (larger card) to get either map to fit along with the application, postcodes and voices. The latest map release you can use is the v720 map - Mike

Hi,
Many thanks for your replies. I've now managed to reset my device and install the new SD card, onto which I've copied my tomtom backup and updated the software.

At the moment I can connect to tomtom home but cant create an account as the site is down so will delay upgrading my maps.

However the latest Great Britain map is quoted as version 725 at £39.95.
Mike, is this the only source for this map as its double the price that you kindly quoted above? Crying or Very sad

Yes 39.95 is the current price for the v725 map. the v810 map for x20 and x30 devices is 49.95.

The new maps can only be bought directly from tomtom, either through the website or via tomtom home. Either way, you will need tomtom home to install the map to your device!

When I posted the above information it was correct:

The maps were available for a period at a discounted price, now the new release maps are available they are at full price.

There is no alternative to purchasing and downloading the maps from TomTom for your device the v725 map is the very latest (less than a week old) for your device - Mike

Hardly double the price. Confused

Mike said the price of £29.95 he quoted was discounted by £10, so one would expect a newly released map to be at least £39.95 - the same as the full price of the previous version.
