Just read the TomTom news email, their great tip for "Smart Security" is:
"Here are two simple security tips: First, you can password-protect your TomTom so only you can use it. Second, set your name and address to appear when your TomTom starts up. That way, if you ever lose your device, the finder can return it or contact you. "
Genuis, absolute genius. Not only do you get your TT stolen they can then find where you live as well.
Thanks TomTom. |

And do you also need to know the password before you can see the name & address, or do thay come ujp before the password.
I think I've read on the forum somewhere that the password is simple to bypass once the device is connected to a computer.
Personally I have my mobile number set to show when turning on and don't bother with a password. I just don't leave it in the car while in the UK. _________________ TT Go Essential |

The name and address comes up on the screen above the number pad for entering your password so it can be read before entering the password.
You don't have to put an address in, I use my mobiloe number and offer a reward for return of the unit. If the Police find it they can contact me, a thief can claim to have fonud it and return it for the reward if they don't know how to bypass the password. The password may slow a thiefs access to your recent destination list which is likely to include your home. |

I can't really see how their knowing your address is going to make any difference.
So the thief knows you live at 25 Acacia Avenue, Somewhere...
The phone book is full of names and addresses. |

If they have just nicked your tomtom from a car park, they know that there is a reasonable chance that you are not at home. If they can read your address on your tomtom they can nip round to you house and pinch your telly while you are out. |

But that doesn't mean nobody's at home.
I have never understood the paranoia over having your Home location set. There are probably plenty of other houses between where they took your device and where you live that they would have just as much chance of finding no one in.
But then I'm not worried about having my TomTom stolen, as I never leave it in the car! _________________ Anita

Just because your car is parked away from the house does not mean there is no one in.
Or
If I live fifty miles away from where the satnav was stolen I can't really see the thief travelling to my home on the off chance.
He/she would be better off taking a chance on the nearest, empty looking house, to where they are. |

I'm not paranoid, I just get a bit worried about all those people following me home. |
