All the features clips on the site displayed "no longer avilable"-or similar. They started to work a few hours after my post, probably a high usage error? They are OK at the time of this post.

Didnt I read the tabs dont resize when many are open? that would be an annoyance for me.

You probably already know several extensions do this, and pictorial bookmarks.
My hesitation not to install this beta on MY PC immediately is a lack of history and in depth reviews. I've seen minor write ups either way regarding speed, but we know nothing yet of potential bugs, popup annoyances, adware and security issues. BTW anyone tried the popup tests?
I will install out of curiosity, but I doubt I will use it long term instead of the personalised and tailored FF I have set up for myself over the last ~ten years. But that's me. |

Likewise FF is set up as I like it.
One thing I did notice about Chrome is that when editing a Post on the Forums, the text didn't 'redraw' correctly until I either paused for several seconds, or I set the cursor to a different paragraph.
Something that in FF reacts instantly. I found it quite disconcerting.
Holding the mouse button, while over Recent Pages, was another strange experience. _________________ Richard

oh, they do...
16 tabs
4 tabs
actually, at the moment the only thing stopping me using it right now is the lack of auto-complete on form elements - for day to day use it's fine, but when dealing with the camera database i'm not happy having to type '1st - mob - awaiting verification or further subs' over and over again!

I will have to say that it's time for Explorer to retire. Chrome is ultra fast, clean and much more convenient to use. Once out of beta, this will be a killer _________________ Garmin 1695 / 255 / 760 w/MSN - Droid w/Google nav + Navigon - Navigon 8100T - Dakota10 - GPSMap76C - GeoMate Jr. |

ie really does need to cease! all the real browsers are striving for css3 compatibility yet with ie8 they are aiming to support CSS2.1 fully... surely, any new browser should be striving to reach upcoming standards?!
it tends to be IE that holds back the w3c in terms of releasing new standards...!

I just noticed that you all seem to like the osx Safari product but have you noticed that there is a version of safari available for windows. I have been using safari on my vista and my xp machines now for months and only dust off ie7 for one site!
So while you are in a experementative mood, why not try safari for windows too? _________________ Dom

I believe that has now been addressed as that was posted in june. The changes made now request the all important user permissions as outlined in that report. I don't personally like the way they fixed it, a bit of a patch job imo. _________________ Dom

on the subject of the carpet bombing issue, a mate of mine had this to say about google chrome...:
Quote: | My big problem with Chrome is that it's based on the Safari WebKit engine from an old version of Safari (Safari 3.1, Apple have patched the WebKit in Safari 3.1.2 - why not use that!) so is vulnerable to carpet-bombing - plus there's a Java exploit that was discussed at this years Black-Hat conf that can be blended with it to drop malware straight to your desktop.
Not a great track record so far - even for a beta! |
i've also been using safari for windows since beta but still prefer firefox 3!

|Still the thing I like the most about these browsers is the sheer simplicity of the software. Windows IE has now become so over complicated that it becomes slow and difficult to use.
I'm sure these new browsers may end up the same way when they begin to mature a little but for now, simple, easy to use and quick. _________________ Dom

mostdom, I think you are mainly correct. But over simplicity leaves software as vulnerable as it is attractive.
The Google PR lady explains that Chrome has/is evolving from open source features developed for other browsers, that would suggest further features will be added in time which will inevitably slow the browser.
FF out of the box is notably quicker before adding extensions, depending on quantity and type. Extensions involving major changes in display that give the graphics card an extra thrashing will slow FF considerably for example.
The bloat etc.. comes at a premium, and if bloat was to be judged by size alone, the current installers are Chrome O.5MB, FF3 7MB and IE7 12.7MB ignoring compression. Coincidently the same order as the compared responsiveness.
My only regret with FF is the integration of RSS, a lightweight standalone is much more effective and desirable IMHO. |

Yep! And even IE once fitted in this category! I recently installed a fresh copy of xp and marveled at how fast internet explorer was before having to install sp1, sp2, sp3, ie7, office, Norton, etc. etc. Once weighted with the junk, IE ends up safer but soo slow! _________________ Dom

Add the once great Sygate to the mix, as they too have been swallowed by Symantec |
