Garmin just released this for the 7xx series - hopefully it will fix some of the "stuttering" other users reported. Unusal that the previous release was 3.10 so why go to 4.00?

Change History
Changes made from version 3.10 to 4.00:
Improvement in Mad Maps performance
Added support for more GPI files

Changes made from version 3.00 to 3.10:
Improve handling of the situation where overlapping map data is present on the device.
Fixed fleet management interface route calculation issue. |

Random switch off / lock up seems fixed. So far so good....
Phone Home bug still there - September apparently.
Also seems to hang occasionally on Loading Maps when switching on... |

"random" lock ups seem to be fixed for me too. I note that the changes include "support for more GPI files" I do have several (5 or 6 depending on which card I have plugged in) and this may possibly have been the reason that not everybody was having a problem.
Whatever, I am pleased that it appears to be fixed. |

Hmmm
Screen froze for about 4 mins on boot up this morning, then it took me a different route to the one it normally calculates (same preferences but Garmin have tweaked with the routing engine as it took a slightly illogical route as well as deciding to suggest that I came off nearly exit on the M25 only to rejoin it again straight away. Voice prompts don't stutter but they don't seem to be spoken as far in advance as I am sure I remember.
Might roll back to 3.00 if anyone else reports a problem |

It does seem to take a very long time at boot up. It displays "loading maps" for much, much longer than before.
I also noticed that it picked out a peculiar route for me yesterday. Seemed to be prefering major roads a little bit more than before.
But on the good side, it did not lock up on me as it had been doing with the previous version. So that for me is a big plus and I shall persist with this new version unless something else tuns up. _________________ Nuvi 760T, Software version 4.80,

I tried to update my nuvi760 today but I think they took it down, as the webupdater cannot find version 4 (only 3.10) and on the official website if you follow the link it will only allow you to download version 3.10 |

Clearing the trip log (under My Data) on the Nuvi seems to decrease the Boot up time - this seems to be the biggest problem for me - admittedly it was mainly motorway driving but a 500 mile round trip was routed as expected and the traffic info displayed correctly which the Nuvi tried to route me around.

Do you mean "increase boot up time" or it boots up quicker?
I find no such pattern. Over the weekend i was away and came back with a trip log near 750 miles. When ever i used the Nuvi i found that there was no real pattern as to how long it would take. One switch on might take 2-3 minutes to get past the "Loading Maps" screen and another might be a few seconds.... |

Ooops - I have changed to read DECREASE boot-up time. I find the boot-up time does seem to vary a lot - sometimes it as if I am still running firmware 3.0 (normal) and others it can "hang" for 3 or 4 minutes - haven't worked out a pattern yet.
Other than a one or two different routes (algorithm has been tweaked) and the boot-up issue 4.0 seems to be running ok for me |

I too am experiencing extremely long times to load maps and the voice instructions lag the screen by up to 0.3 miles which makes for interesting driving!
Here's the response from Garmin (in record time)
Thank you for contacting Garmin(Europe)Ltd.
Thanks for mailing us about this error Peter.
It is actually something we are aware of.
There was a bug in the 4.00 software and now all Nuvi 7XX series software has been removed from the site pending release of 4.10.
This should be available in the next week or so but we haven't been given a date from the US yet.
Version 4.10 will fix all the problems you are having.
Thanks for your patience. |

There have been so many problems with the updates for the 760, that I am still running the software that came out of the box.
Seems strange to me that a company like Garmin seem to rely on their users to do their testing for them, though I suppose it's no different to what Microsoft does. |

Which version is that, out of interest?

Garmin didn't like it when i said they don't have the hardware excuse MS have. Garmin sell hardware that isn't user changeable or customisable, therefore all their software should just work. But it doesn't. Badly..... |

I'm with you on that one - no excuses at all.
I'm still running software version 2.30, Audio version 1.10 and GPS SW Version 3.00s
Until they release an update that isn't full of bugs, I'll carry on with what I've got. |
