It does actually say ( on the website) to use version 1.8 to set up the configuration, then switch to version 2 because it is a Beta and that bit is broken.

Not quite correct. When you start V1.8 the configuration file is created. You don't edit it there. This problem is because TomTom stopped supporting the SDK. So you HAVE to edit the configuration file with an editor if you have software V7 or V8.
