I don't know about other places, but around here, most of the bus lane cameras are on the buses themselves - whether or not there is a road sign. Best just to stay out of them when they are active.

I totally agree with you Andy, and as a constant driver around Brighton and Hove, where they have adopted the `put the bus stop in the road` idea, its a nightmare. It just holds up all the traffic behind it.

Also in Crawley, the Fastway bus scheme has made the roads a slowway!
Sodding traffic lights everywhere now.

In Croydon, the tramway scheme also causes jams, especially around the station, the buses there have their own lanes, but theres never a bus in it when i go by!

Re the bus lane cams POI, i do have one, picked it up 2 years ago according to the date - no ideas where from and never use it.

However if its correct, it must also be churning out lots of tickets, one of them is here ? 51.40659 -0.00022

if they want me to use a bus then they need to improve the 1-per-hour near my house and reduce the £2.60 charge for the 4 miles into town...

I can catch a bus from 200 yds from my house to directly outside my work.

To catch this bus would take me 1 hr 31 mins each way. To drive to work takes about 15 mins to work in the rush hour, and 10 mins to get home.

So I have a choice, I can spend over 3 hours a day on a bus, or less than 30 mins driving. Fuel costs also work out cheaper than the bus tickets.

Apparently the reason for building bus stops out from the kerb is to conform with the disabled access regulations. Bus stops are the responsibility of the local council and not the Bus Company.

One other point, the law states that you have to give way to a bus pulling out from a bus stop.

Just within the last couple of months here in the province of Ontario, the code was changed such that drivers now MUST yield to busses pulling out from the curb rather than SHOULD.

All I've found so far is:

Buses, coaches and trams. Give priority to these vehicles when you can do so safely, especially when they signal to pull away from stops. Look out for people getting off a bus or tram and crossing the road.

It used to be Rule 198 but it changes with almost every new issue of the Highway Code.

It comes down to the definition of must/should.

As it states that you have to "give priority" to a bus signalling to pull away when safe to do so, I stand by the statement with "must" as being correct as it does not state that you "may/should give priority".

I accept that others may interpret it in another way.

I remember that when they started putting stickers on all the London buses, stating "Highway Code Rule something or other" it definitely had no force of law, they were just trying it on.
