I don't know about other places, but around here, most of the bus lane cameras are on the buses themselves - whether or not there is a road sign. Best just to stay out of them when they are active. _________________ Gerry

Bus Lanes are there for a reason, so as not to block or hold up traffic. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2699lmt

you have GOT to be kidding!
They are there to REDUCE traffic flow for other road users, in an attempt to force as many people out of their cars and on to public transport.
Ken Livingstone used to admit this quite freely...
I think the same goes for the recent tactic of extending bus stops OUT INTO the road, making it harder to get past the bus while it is stopped. |

I totally agree with you Andy, and as a constant driver around Brighton and Hove, where they have adopted the `put the bus stop in the road` idea, its a nightmare. It just holds up all the traffic behind it.
Also in Crawley, the Fastway bus scheme has made the roads a slowway!
Sodding traffic lights everywhere now.
In Croydon, the tramway scheme also causes jams, especially around the station, the buses there have their own lanes, but theres never a bus in it when i go by!
Re the bus lane cams POI, i do have one, picked it up 2 years ago according to the date - no ideas where from and never use it.
However if its correct, it must also be churning out lots of tickets, one of them is here ? 51.40659 -0.00022

Not to mention bus stops every 400 yards.
I get free travel - and i don't go near the crappy service. 1hr 20 mins by 4 buses, 15 mins by car and 7 mins on the Trumper.
Don't get me going on this, everyone has strong views - but mine are stronger!! _________________ Triumph Tbird 1700. And now a Bonnie T100. |

Bus lanes work very well in Swindon so it can only be down to your muppet council. Agree with your comment on stops in the road,IMO they are dangerous and infuriate all drivers. As for stops every 400 yards that is a luxury, some of them here are every 100 yards _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2699lmt

if they want me to use a bus then they need to improve the 1-per-hour near my house and reduce the £2.60 charge for the 4 miles into town...

I can catch a bus from 200 yds from my house to directly outside my work.
To catch this bus would take me 1 hr 31 mins each way. To drive to work takes about 15 mins to work in the rush hour, and 10 mins to get home.
So I have a choice, I can spend over 3 hours a day on a bus, or less than 30 mins driving. Fuel costs also work out cheaper than the bus tickets.
Apparently the reason for building bus stops out from the kerb is to conform with the disabled access regulations. Bus stops are the responsibility of the local council and not the Bus Company.
One other point, the law states that you have to give way to a bus pulling out from a bus stop.

Are you sue about that?
I'm pretty sure this is one of the Highway Code's "you SHOULD..." rules rather than a "you MUST..." rule. In other words, it's guidance. Something they'd like you to do but no actual law to back it up.
I went to the On-line Highway codebut they've changed it all around and I couldn't see a search box, so haven't found the "rule number" yet.

Small world......
Just within the last couple of months here in the province of Ontario, the code was changed such that drivers now MUST yield to busses pulling out from the curb rather than SHOULD. |

All I've found so far is:
223
Buses, coaches and trams. Give priority to these vehicles when you can do so safely, especially when they signal to pull away from stops. Look out for people getting off a bus or tram and crossing the road. |

It used to be Rule 198 but it changes with almost every new issue of the Highway Code.
It comes down to the definition of must/should.
As it states that you have to "give priority" to a bus signalling to pull away when safe to do so, I stand by the statement with "must" as being correct as it does not state that you "may/should give priority".
I accept that others may interpret it in another way.

I remember that when they started putting stickers on all the London buses, stating "Highway Code Rule something or other" it definitely had no force of law, they were just trying it on. |
