What the shell is so special about Shell fuel that causes all this dialogue anyway. I pour very expensive diesel into my car and it goes. What else would I want it to do? |

brand loyalty?! dunno really!!
i know certain people ONLY use eg BP for the nectar points etc but i'm not aware of shell doing anything similar?
the valid point still stands though, some of the POIs need updating / fixing.

thank you "oldboy" i have been over and over the map and sat nav and to tell you the truth i dont recognise the area up there as alot of the driving was a case of letting the sat nav direct me or follow others in the group so road names and villages didnt register with me. all i know is my poi's were downloaded in may or june when i replaced my faulty sat nav.
Others on the trip who were moaning about shell poi's being inaccurate too claim to have them off this site, but after seeing an earlier post about poi's available somehwere on the shell site im starting to have doubts on the ones they reported. all i can comment on is the ones i had. |

According to the Shell Website there are no Fuel Stations, South of Keswick until you get to Lancaster, or East to Penrith.
|
According to the PGPSW database, the situation is very similar. There is one in Penrith, one in Kendal, and one in Lancaster, but nothing else currently on the database.
There are none marked at M6 service stations until you get to Charnock Richard (near Bolton).
When did you last download the Shell POIs from the database? |

The clue was in his earlier comment that Quote: | my car only takes 98Ron or above | What's really special is my reaction to his PM to me entitled "what's your problem?" My problem is that the POIs and cameras on this website are the product of a lot of effort by a lot of volunteers. Call me old-fashioned, but I consider it wrong for somebody to come on here slagging off that work with a few well-chosen unsubstantiated statements.
Allegedly a whole group of them went on convoy into the lake district, using pgpsw's Shell POIs to find petrol and the POIs were wrong. As with his "testing" of the pgpsw camera database 3 months ago (for which unsubstantiated public criticism his free membership of this site was withdrawn), he used an out of date download and chose to post here about how he Quote: | found it more a hinderance than help and thankfully shell's website have a list of actual stations | Remembering his previous history, I decided to take him to task over it - my memory was justified when you see his later admissions that his download could be 3 months out of date, perhaps the rest of the convoy didn't have pgpsw POIs and that perhaps Shell's own POI list is not too accurate either. _________________ Dennis

Thanks for that.
Did you notice that the TT version is only for the UK, and the Navman/Garmin covers international locations? _________________ Richard

Right, I've done a comparison now. These are my initial findings.
The UK TomTom Version also covers N.I. It looks as if they are Postcode generated. I only checked a few.
The International versions for Navman/Garmin covers Eastern and Western Europe, but not N.I.
There are differences in the locations, comparing the 2 files. They don't always agree in the UK. Being a mile out is not uncommon.
Compared to the PGPSW File, the International version seems the more accurate of the 2 Shell files, but when all the files are overlaid on to Google, the PGPSW locations are more accurate than either.
I mainly checked around the area being previously discussed.
[Edited to add] The International File doesn't cover all East European Countries, but does cover Turkey! _________________ Richard

I have an extremely up to date POI file for Shell stations!
Somebody tell me how I submit it and I will!
I can confirm that the Shell site in Penrith is still open.
The sites you probably have listed in the lake district were shell sites owned by dealers and may have changed to another oil company, this happens frequently
In the lake district there are also Shell sites in Kendal, Ulverston and Barrow along with two in Carlisle
The BP motorway services used to have shell pumps on them until January this year, they no longer do! |

Send them to poisATpocketgpsworld.com
Those you mentioned are already in the DB and their location has been fairly recently confirmed. _________________ Richard

Hi MaFt, Shell do "Drivers Club" points which are similar to Nectar points.
A couple of months ago, they were giving away toy Ferrari's if you spent £x on V-Power. _________________ TT Go 720 (T)

The thing is, some cars simply prefer Shell V Power. You will find that the vast majority of Subaru Impreza drivers (myself included) will always use V Power because the car, being highly tuned, runs much better. It takes a tankful of the stuff before the Engine Management adjusts everything optimally.
These cars have to use super unleaded, but then there are different grades. Tesco fuel is OK, although you don't get quite so many MPG (and lets face it, you don't get many anyway so every little helps) because of the extra biofuel content.
Best to stick to what we know works best- V Power. Hence the database is very useful! |

Yes, Andy, cynical. But I definitely get better mileage and performance when I sit in my van and shout very loudly "BRRRRM, BRRRRRM". I use it to overtake VWs. _________________ Dennis

How do you get the Shell symbol to show up on a tomtom? The POI of Shell garages I downloaded from the POI section on here worked fine but is outdated and the list of stations I downloaded from the above link has up to date sites but the shell symbol won't display? |
