Hmmm... my review on Amazon for the S90i (which had attracted about 43 out of 47 positive responses from other customers) has just disappeared. Is NavMan putting pressure on retailers to withdraw negative reviews?

Wouldn't have thought a company the size of Navman could put pressue on one the size of Amazon - particularly for a unit that is soon to replaced. Either way, will all the positive and negative reviews for all sorts of things on Amazon, that they would do it
Perhaps there is another reason...
Which unit are you using now Dave - did you stick with the Navigon 4 or the Navman? Navigons v8 looks promising, if its stable and quicker than previous versions. Have you had chance to take a look at their 8110 yet?
Do you honestly beleive that less than 90% of the reviews on retailer webs sites are fabricated anyway?
It's amazing how many reviews that that appear on one site, appear on others, identical almost word for word. A manufacturer the size of Navman (And I am not suggesting they do) is more likely to flood the web site with positive reviews. It's easier than convincing them to pull reviews.
My experiance is that product reviews from web based retailers are worth exactly what you pay for them. If you whan an honest, reliable assessment, read a review from some who does not stand to make money from your purchase decision e.g. PGW .

While I accept some will be, and - if you stand by what you say - so some of the negative reviews will be by competitors. It cannot be otherwise, if what you say is true
However, many are real people, just like you and me who are either pleased with their purchase - and wish to tell the world - or disappointed and feel "ripped off" and wish to do the same
And while I agree PGPSW is an independent forum, your comments and mine are surrounded by ads, which sell the products we are talking about
Amazon, for example, would I am sure, be happy to sell 1,000 tomtoms, 1,000 navmans, or a 1,000 of any mix of the two a long as they are selling - so little benefit in them pushing the reviews of one unit. Someone reading it will end by purchasing something or other

I'm back with the old Navigon. The maps may be five years out-of-date but the software is just far, far better overall.

The problem is that from 2005 Navigon went down the pan in terms of product quality. As you say, software performance was a big problem, as was TMC support in the UK (at least until they switched to TM for the 7100 series). In fairness they did (eventually) admit to the problems their newer software/hardware had but in terms of actual customer support, they are/were utterly disorganised. I'm definitely keeping an eye on the 8110 but I won't be at the head of the queue when it hits the streets!
I e-mailed Amazon about the missing review but they've not got back to me yet.
My unit was sent to Navman tech support and they reinstalled the software. It seemed to work but yesterday and today it has rebooted 11 times, so its back to square one. Navman say they will repair it again.
Maybe tech support read this;
There are three engineers in a car; an electrical engineer, a chemical
engineer and a Microsoft engineer. Suddenly the car just stops by the side of the road, and the three engineers look at each other wondering what could be wrong.
The electrical engineer suggests stripping down the electronics of the car
and trying to trace where a fault might have occurred. The chemical engineer, not knowing much about cars, suggests that maybe the fuel is becoming emulsified and getting blocked somewhere.
Then, the Microsoft engineer, not knowing much about anything, comes up with a suggestion, "Why don't we close all the windows, get out, get back in, open the windows again, and maybe it'll work !?"
I recently bought a Navman S90i. The only problem I experienced was that the mapping accuracy was poor. I found in the region of 30 major errors within a 5 mile radius.
None of these were recent, some errors related to POIs on the wrong roads, completely out of location, junctions that have had right hand turns banned for 20 odd years etc.
I raised the issue with the place where I bought it and they amongst a number of other people kept on about how good the Garmin 76o was in comparison.
So I made the elemental mistake of buying one.
Never again....NEVER.
The mapping and directions were actually much worse, the unit is just nowhere near user friendly as the Navman. For example on the Navman, you came select the POIs you want displayed. Not on the Garmin.
It quickly became apparant I had made a major blunder. So I sold the Garmin and bought another S90i.
So far I am quite happy with it.
So come on folks, lets give Navman some credit. There may well be gliches, granted but it is a far superior unit to the Garmins that everyone seems to rave on about.
Still many people with rebooting problems and Navman have their collective heads buried in the sand, simple answer to original question is YES, it is an expensive mistake.

With a ToMTom 730, Navigon and Garmin Nuvi 300 to hand (all with their own unique good and bad features) by preferred choice of unit for getting me to 3 appointments a day, 5 days a week is my Navman S90i
Its routing is better, its vocal instruction the most clear, and visual display the best (if a little washed out with this sunny weather)
If it has lane guidance, it would be perfect (it hasn't!)
So I guess, its another one of those horses for courses questions for which there is no definative answer
xtraseller, you are one of the lucky ones, take a search through these forums and elsewhere, it does seem that a lot of people have rebooting or overlay problems.
The problem is probably due to some obscure reason, like maybe too many POI's or too many photos or too many traffic messages, or it is a Sunday in July and its raining, who knows. The problem is that Navman appear not to be addressing the issue. Their answer is reloading the software. If only they agreed there was a problem and that they were addressing it then I would have a higher opinion of them and their product.
BTW when it is working it is good, but when it fails it is always at the wrong time.

I agree with what you say - I have the PGSW mobile database loaded, together with my Navman speed camera database (currently only fixed units), and its works fine 95% of the time - rebooting about once a week (every 30 or so journeys) which is annoying when it happens sometimes, but liveable (my PC does the same, which I keep on all the time, as does my sky+ box, laptop and mobile phone - so its commonplace, if nothing less)
There is a Version 2 of the software which (i have read) much improved multipoint routing, quicker interface and faster routing, together with improced POI handling and LIVE local Search (in the UK via Yell.com) via your bluetooth mobile or online via NavDesk (v2!)
This is just about to be released, with updated mapping (with 3D landmarks too)
I believe this is only available via mapping upgrade, but Navman would be wise to release a software only update foc to appease the doubters out there
Like you say, the interface and unit is otherwise excellent

I would like to address this issue with Navman but need more clout, is everyone who has this problem prepared to send me a PM with either their Case ID or serial number so that I can gather them together and prove to Navman that they really do have a problem and that they must address it.
