im not the only one to notice this, after a recent camping trip various other members had sat navs with shell poi's on it. i had already checked the shell site for a place to fill up near the lakes and found penrith all others within 15miles of keswick did not exist and were actually a smaller company that ive not heard of before (not much use on red). M6 back wasnt much better telling us that various service stations were shell when in fact BP so i gave up pulling into them as i and others on the trip only wanted vpower for our cars. |

I've noticed this as well with other stations, they do change hands a lot.
A number of Total stations are now Q8 or Murco. There's a station down by my parents has changed 'owners' about 3 times in 4 years - no idea what it is now, but it is one of the smaller independents.
The original POI may have been submitted from the Shell data base, it is up to users of the POIs to update them whenever possible to help keep them up to date. _________________ Triumph Tbird 1700. And now a Bonnie T100. |

Do you mean th one on Bridge Road in Penrith? If so, can you help us all by updating the database using the POI submissions page? Either delete the Shell station or (preferably) amend it to the correct distributor. |

I once knew two guys - one had a bumper sticker saying "I don't use Shell", the other had one saying "I don't use Esso" - they both had adopted some politically correct stance which by pure coincidence forbade each from using fuel from the company they DIDN'T work for!!
Have you tried DennisN fuel? - beats both Shell vpower and BP Ultimate hands down for green and whizz - 8 out of 9 cats say so.
Seriously, I hope you've submitted all the changes you noticed - that's the way this works - get something out, put something in - I'm talking POIs, not fuel. _________________ Dennis

the one in penrith was the only one that was correct up that way. i havent submitted any of them as i didnt expect to have to go round wasting fuel trying to find one that was actually there, found it more a hinderance than help and thankfully shell's website have a list of actual stations so i will print that off next time i go travelling.
The reason i use Shell is my car only takes 98Ron or above limiting me to a few different suppliers and owners of similar cars have all recommended vpower to all the others. |

Nice. I'm sure you benefit from other POIs that other people have bothered to submit and correct??? The database starts off inacurate because many of these POIs lists are made from list of postcodes which only give a general location. If changes and errors aren't submitted then it'll never become more accurate. I don't think it's very fair to take and not give back. Not every Shell Petrol Station POI is totally inaccurate, is it?

How did you find petrol stations in the past before you had POIs on your Sat Nav? Or lists off the internet? |

Any particular one you are having trouble with?
When did you last download the POI File from here? _________________ Richard

hold on before you jump down my throat Paul. I submit camera sites for the database and if i spot any changes on my patch i submit them, so dont come on me with the attitude i take and dont give.
I make sure that areas i know well that anything wrong with the database is reported as i have the local knowledge and can easily answer any questions about it if at the pgpsworld end their is a query. Considering i was in an area i didnt know and was on a tight schedule as well as limited fuel (we all were) i think reporting the fact their is a problem there that someone from that area could just check to make sure and ammend as i would be happy to check garages locally to me if someone said they were missing. Come on at the end of the day at least i did warn you and not do the "its wrong but someone else will report it" attitude. |

That is how the post sounded.

Unfortunately that isn't how your Fri Jul 25, 2008 12:09 am post came across. It came across as aggressive with phrases like
Quote: | i didnt expect to have to go round wasting fuel trying to find one that was actually there, found it more a hinderance than help and thankfully shell's website have a list of actual stations so i will print that off next time i go travelling |
It sounded like we were wasting your time and you'll have been better off not using the Shell Petrol POI. If you had explained the situation better as you did in the last post then i might have understood the situation better, but you didn't. |

But we still don't know which ones were incorrect.
I downloaded the POI file from Shell's own site a few months back. I very quickly switched back to the PGPSW version! |

Well, that's news. I think maybe Paul is remembering this ......
On 27th April 2008, smstextaddict wrote: | i gave up reporting about a year ago after 1 spent a good 6 months reporting via the link which doesnt seem to acknowledge whats reported. |
And the reply ....
On 27th April 2008, Darren wrote: | I have checked our submission records for the on-line system and NONE are listed for you. we hold comprehensive submission records for every camera AND every submitter so unless you used a different user-name then I don't understand why we have no record of any submission from you |
Looks to me like Paul had you right. _________________ Dennis

sorry dennis but whats that got to do with shell poi's? You no doubt dont talk to your other mods because if you did you will find i still DO report missing locations speak to MaFt and the other mod i dealt with. ive reported many that are local to me that were missing (would you like the camera numbers?) as well as some incorrect speeds that your database was showing (ill forward the emails if you like to you).
I think one of the towns was ambleside, but as i wasnt local to the area i wasnt too sure of the name other than it was south of keswick. then coming back down the M6 from the lakes we came across a number of motorway sites that the poi's indicated as shell but was not. So instead of picking arguements why not work with people? im starting to find it a waste of time trying to report things when this is the kind of response i get from someone who "SHOULD BE SETTING AN EXAMPLE". like i said least i ammaking an effort to report it many people dont and hope someone else can be bothered.
Next time i am up that way i will take time to stop and write down all grid references for you and take photos. |

no i never said you were wasting my time, i was pointing out what a waste of time and fuel it is when databases get out of date and you are in an area you dont know. considering around the south i have no problems with the poi's why should i suddenly experience problems in another part of the country? |

didnt know shell did the poi's. i have posted above that the places were south of kesick possibly ambleside and around that part and also along the M6 (service areas) which has magically become bp garages. |

On the M6 there are only 2 shown. One at Burtonwood and the other at Keele.
I couldn't actually find a POI to download to check that for details, perhaps someone could post the Link. _________________ Richard
