What device have you got, if it is an x20 unit then the voices are on the CD that came with the unit, otherwise copy the files from your backup on the PC (if you don't have a backup this is a very good example as to why they are so important) - Mike |

Hi
Vrtually every time I have operated my 920 in tomtom home I loseKate. When i dsconnect and restart device I get message saying selected voice (kate) is not available. When i tap next, lo and behold there she is and ready to talk. All support do is tell me how to reinstall voices. Yesterday home downloaded Kate as an update. but still it says she isn't there. |

Same thing happens to me on my 720 since upgrade to v8.010, although it happened on random occasions before. Mainly it seems to be after operating my Go with HOME. I use Tim for nav instructions and Kate for warnings etc. When I disconnect, I get the message that the voice selected is not available. Then the change voice screen comes up with Kate as the first option. I then have to scroll through to select Tim, then select Kate again as the computer voice.
Regardless of Support's advice, I think it's a bug which was there in version 7, and is worse in v8. It's an annoying niggle not a serious problem. _________________ TT Go Essential |

Ok, apart from "re-setting" the unit, what does a 30 second press do?Would you not lose anything that you have loaded onto the system by doing a factory re-set? |

Pressing the reset button de-powers the device, the on/ off switch does not turn the power fully off. The restore factory defaults will lose some of your settings such as POI Warnings etc but it doesn't actually remove or delete anything from the device - Mike |

Does a 30 second reset mean holding the button in for 30 seconds, or waiting 30 seconds before turning on again? And does it do anything differnt to a short reset? _________________ TT Go Essential |

I have the same thing happen on my new Go 730T but only when I use the Home software to control the unit, very odd.
So I have stopped controlling the unit via the home software. |

I'll stick my neck out here and say that I believe "a reset is a reset".
So long as you hold it in long enough for the power to die completely (i.e. a second or two) then it makes no difference at all whether you hold it in for 5 seconds or 5 minutes.
Anyone got any proof to say different (and "advice" from TomTom support doesn't count! ) |

Andy, that's why I asked. I can't see what difference it can make once the device has powered off. But I did wonder if it made a difference if you turned it on immediately or if you waited a while.
I remember being told many years ago never to turn on a computer for at least 10 seconds after turning it off. That was before the days of Windows though when a computer didn't have to go through a shutting down process when it was turned off. _________________ TT Go Essential |

Could it be that you have stored Kate's voice on a memory card? I had the exact same behaviour as you're describing before I tried changing the storage location to the main memory. I have one of my maps stored on the same memory card and that works fine, so I don't think it's the read speed of the SD card that is the issue. Maybe the trick is to use different storage locations for the map and the voice files. When I have time I will see what happens if I use the map stored in main memory and install a computer voice on the memory card. If that works, that would prove my theory.
[edit:] After a quick test I've arrived at the conclusion that the v8.010 application doesn't like the computer voices to be stored on a memory card. So, as long as the voice files are stored in main memory, they will work fine, regardless of where the map is stored. I wonder if this is something TomTom can fix in future bug fixes.
