For those of you who haven't already noticed, I have three different TomTom devices. I always use them with route set, irrespective of whether or not the destination is familiar. Someone asked the other day, Why have three? so I thought I'd share with you the value of having a choice. Here are three screen dumps taken, one from each device, at the same (stationary) point one day last week when I was doing my fortnightly little bread and butter run from the same pickup to the same delivery address.
All three devices were set to Fastest Route and at first I deliberately ignored them all and chose DennisN Routing. Eventually, that gave me these three choices. There's no trickery here - I wasn't moving (traffic holdups showing in first picture) and the destination is a POI in the same POI file copied into each device.
15.9 miles, ETA 11:05am.
25.1 miles, ETA 11:11am.
31.6 miles, ETA 11:16am.

Say.......THAT will instill confidence in all TomTom users from now on, regardless of unit type, as we plan a 'fastest' route!
(p.s., seriously ... thanks for taking the time to share). |

Hi DennisN
Now, that is an interesting article but it was like reading a wonderful book that had its last page missing. Come on, put us all out of our misery, which device won. _________________ Tomtom Go 720.

Ah. Personally I think that more to the point is all those people I see every day driving round with only one TomTom and I wonder to myself, Which one of the three have they got?
For myself, today I went to Liverpool, straightforward run really, but the TTs showed a different route from Autoroute Express which I checked last night before going. I don't know Liverpool well, but I could see there wasn't much variation between the two routes. But nowadays, every time I go to somewhere with a bit more wandering for the directions, I always have a sneaking doubt about whether I'm going the best way, because I don't know those destination like I know my local one. In these days of fuel costs being almost 50% higher than a year ago, those extra 15 miles mean much more than an extra litre of diesel - which comes out of MY pocket. When I first started in the whitevanman business, my first fuel on 1st October 1999 cost 74.9 pence a litre. Yesterday at one of the cheapest places around here, it was 128.9p. In 1999 I started at a rate of 46p per loaded mile. Today, I get 50p. Routing matters A GREAT DEAL!!
When the IQ Routing maps/Apps come out for my devices, I'll update one at a time to compare to see what a difference it makes. I am very dubious right now. _________________ Dennis

Looks like the one in your third picture is telling you to do a big "turn around when possible". There's a green arrow pointing back the way you've come! |

Yes, it did (but "Make a U-Turn"). Try it yourselves.
Original route from 51.49338, -2.63676 to 51.39118, -2.35294. All three originally wanted to take me the long way round.
Recalc from 51.46836, -2.63388 to the same (51.39118, -2.35294).
There are lots of different TT devices, Apps and Maps out there - how about we see how many different distances and ETAs we can come up with? _________________ Dennis

Using 730 with v8.010 and map v8.05.
First route:IQ routes weekday
First route:IQ routes weekday (first alternative)
First route:IQ routes weekend
First route:IQ routes weekend (first alternative)
Second route:IQ routes weekday
Second route:IQ routes weekday (first alternative)
Second route:IQ routes weekend
Second route:IQ routes weekend (first alternative)
It is always worth checking the first alternative route to save some miles. _________________ Tomtom Go 1005
