Seeing as tomtom have kindly ignored my instruction to cancel my order for v3 (which after a month, I still have not received), is it possible to use the v3 map, on v2?
IIRC, the maps are installed separately to the software. Is there anything other than map data that is intrinsically different about the map file? |

No, you can not use v3 maps on v2.
You can install v2 and v3 into separate folders (with separate map folders) but that's painful because they still share the registry.
Either you switch or you don't... _________________ Lutz

Adding on to Lutz's answer, which is correct, I don't see why you'd want to use a version 3 map on version 2 software. Someone else started a thread about this, and didn't answer that question (or if they did, I missed the answer).
The problems that most annoy people with Navigator 3 in Great Britain (poor address lookup being key amongst them) are arguably more to do with the map data than the program.
Much of the update cost is, I believe, for the map data anyway - the upgrades in the Navigator 3 program are a bonus. As you will get three months of free TomTom Traffic when the latter service launches, you could say that that alone is worth at least half of the upgrade cost.
