Hi everyone,
I am a GPS and forum nubie and proud new owner of a TomTom GO 730, it works perfect in the US and Canada where I use it the most HOWEVER I live in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean and I was wondering since a map of Trinidad exists on Google maps if their was any way possible for me to get a map of Trinidad loaded onto my TomTom device? I would appreciate any help.
My Exact location is:
N10.65734°
W61.51601° |

Sorry,
I don't think you are going to get anywhere with this.
Your tomtom device can only use maps supplied by tomtom and they don't appear to have one covering Trinidad & Tobago. |

Unfortunately not the maps have to be coded to work with the GPS unit. They are far more complex than a simple picture on a GPS unit screen. Take a look at the Navteq demo video loaded earlier this week and that will show just how complex the mapping data for GPS units is. _________________ Navigon 8450 LIVE |

Well how hard is it to learn to code (does a tutorial exist) or seeing that I drive all over most of the island every so often does a learning software exist then? (just trying to think of the glass half full and hope a bit). |

No learning software exists.
Tomtom have not released any details of the format of their map data files (why would they, they want to sell maps not have people creating their own) so it is not possible to create your own map.
It is very hard to learn to code maps if the supplier will not give you any clues to the format required. Many people will have tried and all must have failed as there are no navigable non-tomtom maps available for tomtom devices. |

There are third party applications that can take basic image files and display your position from the built in GPS receiver on the screen, this will not perform any route navigation though.
There isn't too much in the way of mapping available from Open Street Mapping for this area, although a small amount of roads do exist on Tobago.
To use images such as this on your device have a look at This web site, although you might have to create the actual map yourself while driving around, which the device is quite capable of the required data logging - check out the Open Street Mapping site for the necessary software and some instructions - it isn't too easy, but at the same time can be quite rewarding when you see your efforts displayed on the main map - Mike |

Thanks alot for the info guys, I really appreciate it. Who knows maybe one day I'll get lucky and they (TT) will do a map of Trinidad.
P.S. "I will check out the link and see what I can do" Thanks again. |
