I've been a longtime TOMTOM user with Navigator 5 on my PDA.
I've decided I need to upgrade as I am driving in France this summer and want to invest in a dedicated device (with Maps)

(i've also been a long-time lurker in the forums)....

My question is.....

Should I get a ONE XL EU or 720 / 730?

Here's my thinking and i'd welcome any validation or other suggestions.

1) am a TOMTOM fan and have ruled out the other PND vendors
2) Future upgrades would be nice - so I don't want a dead-end device (I like extra features that are useful to me)
3) I'm not that interested in MP3 playback or hands free as the car has that already.
4) I like the idea of IQ routes - I know this is only available on the 730, but the general consensus is that it'll come to the 720 eventually.
5) Traffic seems like a waste of time - may revisit when HD comes along.

Current thinking
1) get a 720 @ £190ish before they sell out
2) get a ONE XL EU and hope TT offer an upgrade path to V8 s/w & maps – deals @ £139 (on the front page of PGPSW)
3) bite the bullet and get a 730 @ £260ish

Purchase time frame is within the next month, so I guess there might be a bit of price fluctuation.

Thx All.

Casp.

How about the new XL due out in next few weeks which I reckon will include v8 navcore & maps to give you the IQ routes etc?

Thanks Franb - just done some digging.

Back to pro's and con's again - I guess the new XL will probably carry a £50 premium on the current model? - It also seems to have lost the SD slot - but I assume that's not an issue as I will only want the western Europe maps on it (that come as standard anyway)

So options now are:
1) 720 - before they sell out - plus the potential upgrade costs
2) 730 - with the extra bells and whistles (which I don't need)
3) XL EU - with older Navcore, maps and questionable mount?
4 New XL EU - newer s/w & maps and probably around the £180 mark

decisions, decisions, decisions......

http://www.find-tomtom-deals.co.uk/ for best deals.

It's your call/budget but if you don't want bells & whistles or handsfree/mp3 then an XL old or new.

I have just gone through exactly this dilemma!

I couldn't wait for the new XL because my holiday starts two days before it is due, so it was between the old XL, 720 or 730.

In the end I got the 720 (from ebuyer - excellent service). I wasn't bothered by most of the extra features, but really wanted the spoken road names, which I believe the XL doesn't do.

So far I'm impressed. TomTom hasn't really changed that much from the V3 PDA version I had, but the large screen, increased speed of calculation and all-in-one unit are worthwhile to me.

I just wish it had multi-touch (AKA iPhone) and satellite view (AKA Google Maps). Smile

So, I have decided I'll probably go got the budget option and get a ONE XL EU (previous version).

However, I have one last question. I see from the specs that the ONE has a slower processor than the GO x20/x30. Does this make much of a difference in route calculation time?

Also, the one XL seems to have a different GPS chipset (hammerhead v. the SIRF III in the newer units). Any ideas why tomtom switched and does anyone know if there are any issues with the quality of the fix in marginal areas? - I also worry as my ford has IR reflective glass and front demist - I have heard that this can reduce the quality of the fix.

Thanks again for the advice,

Casp.
