New TomTom owner - initial backup question (Mac user)

Just purchased a TomTom 720.

The FAQ only covers Windows.

On a Mac (Leopard) is it simply a matter of using a card reader (assuming everything comes on a removable card?) and dragging everything via Finder?

I'm a Mac user too. Just plug in the 720, it mounts as a disk drive and the copy all the contents to a folder on your Mac.

The 720 out of the box has all it's maps and software on internal flash storage. If you later expand it using the SD slot, backup that in the same way. If your 720 has a storage card inserted it will mount as two drives.

If you subsequently have to perform a restore, it's tidier if you run the dot_clean command from a Terminal session on your Mac against the backup folder you have on your Mac to remove the . and ._ files before copying back but if you don't it doesn't affect operation. As I say not essential but keeps the files on your 720 nice'n'tidy Smile

Just for info, quite a few people have thought there is a "special shape" SD card in their Go720's.
In fact it comes with just a plastic dummy to keep dust out of the slot, and as Darren says, everything you need is installed on the 2GB internal memory.
You can add an SD card for extra maps or to store music etc. but it isn't neccessary on these models.
On a PC bothe the card slot and the Flash memory always appear as two new drives, but on a Mac I believe the card slot only shows up when a card is actually present.

The backup scheme though is the same principle. All that you want to do is copy EVERYTHING from the TT's storage memory to somewhere safe on your computer (and preferably burn it to a CD-R or DVD-R too).
If you start a "backups" folder, you can make another backup every time before you do any upgrades or make any changes.

TomTom 720 arrived Saturday (speedy quick delivery from ebuyer.com) and all seems to work well.

I have previously had no problems backing up my 720 in the manner described. However, today I added a 2GB 100x SD card and the backup failed about a quarter of the way through. On re3moving the SD card, the backup completed normally....

Anyone got any ideas why this should happen?

Point taken, but you CAN do a backup without a card reader Wink

Are you sure that TomTom still us USB 1.1? - my 720 will backup 1.81GB in about 8 minutes...not indicative of the 11MB/s of USB 1.1 and more in line with USB 2 (480MB/s).

Obviously, a PC/Mac will require USB 2 connectivity

Quite sure, that's what it says under "About this Mac" when the TT is connected.
