Hi All, Just a quick question, are the gantry cameras active when there is no speed displayed? i.e. if i am doing over 70mph will i get flashed by them when the signs are not active.
Thanks in advance |

As far as i am aware - YES as your still doing more then the national speed limit. The cameras are active 24/7 i think.
Depending on what speed you went over them, that might determine you getting flashed or not...
Any ideas on what gantry it was location wise?
Cheers

Thanks for your reply
I like to cruise along motorways at about 75-80mph but i have been sticking to the limit through the VSL and was wondering if i could go over without being flashed, I havent actually been flashed (yet) but as i said before i was wondering if i could go over without being caught |

The cameras act as normal when the national Speed Limit is in force.
All cameras generally apply the ACPO rule of Speed Limit + 10% + 2 mph so at 70 mph the trigger speed will be 79 mph. However there is talk of a new type of camera with a lower trigger speed.
Don't forget if you are judging your speed by your car speedo that also under-reads anyway. |

I thought that, until recently at least, they DID NOT work until the matrix signs were switched on.
Then there were certainly some reports that they were going to be made active all the time, but it all got mixed up with rumours about new digital cameras replacing the old film ones and new sections coming into force, so I didn't think we'd got a definitive answer. |

According to this site
Quote: | The system was never intended to be a "speed trap" to simply prosecute drivers travelling over the national speed limit, however an amendment to the specification called for it to have this ability, and it subsequently became clear that the Police were more interested in this ability than its original purpose of smoothing traffic flow. It should be noted as a result that the system also enforces the national speed limit of 70mph as well as any lower limit that may be set. Therefore do not assume that because no signals are displayed you are safe from a possible ticket if you are over the limit. |
But then others say different.... |

Paul.
Surely you mean the car speedo OVER-reads. The car speedo normally displays a higher speed than your actual speed, thus over-reads.
Feel free to correct me if this is wrong. |

Certainly back 'in my day' I was of the understanding that the cameras were only operational when the VSL was in force.
The simple face that these were at the time film cameras meant they dare not operate them at all times or they'd have been changing the film every hour!
However, recent rumours about a change to digital may well support the theory that they are now operational at all times _________________ Darren Griffin |
