On the A4147 between Leverstock Green (Hemel Hempstead) and St. Albans, there are two pairs of Gatso cameras in the 40 mile zone.
I use the road most weeks and a couple of days ago, spotted that each camera seemed to have gained a friend. About 5 meters past each Gatso is a tall pole with a box looking like a spotlight pointing down and at about 90 degrees to the carriageway. Anyone know what these do?

Could be an extra flash or an infrared illuminator.
The trial new-type camera at Gillette Corner on the A4 has got something similar, and the camera on the A3 I photographed a week or two ago had two extra posts that looked like they might end up with them too. |

OK, will try to get a pix. Not an easy road to stop but will be over there in a few days. |

Hi
The Gatso at Winterbourne Stoke on the A303 has one grey pole with a box on top with a lamp in, and about 5 to 10 meters away is another pole with grey box with a red lamp and what looks like a camera in . The first one with lamp pointing same direction as Gatso at an angle , second with camera pointing towards Gatso at an angle across carraige way.

Aha. The ones I saw in Hemel looked like the bottom picture. They are certainly pointing at right angle to the road, or close to it. Maybe they have not been properly positioned yet. Not seen any sign of a red lamp yet.
So what do they add to the Gatso?

I'd been guessing that it would be where they found that (for whatever reason) they couldn't get a good picture of the licence plate at night.
Maybe glare or flare from a lampost or bright neon sign? |
