Can anyone tell me if the Renault Scenic Windscreen blocks GPS signals to the Garmin Nuvi 350. Help would be much appreciated as I need the information by Monday before going to Spain where I will be driving a Scenic.

Hi M8

I've a Renault Scenic and mine has a metallic windscreen coating to keep some of the heat out. To my knowledge, this is standard if it has an air conditioner installed. And then I know you won't be lucky with reception.

If you can, I'd advice on getting one of the small magnetic active antennas anyway, the reception is simply better. I use one any time I rent a car, even if not absolutely required.

In your case, as I assume that you have a rental car, hope for a "cheap" one, which does not have this feature. But if it has, note that around the rear view mirror in top center of the windscreen, you'll have an area with a black pattern around the mount of the mirror. That area is not coated.
But be warned, it's not easy to fit a built-in GPS antenna to get the signal through that tiny piece of "open sky".

Hi BeatO

Many thanks for your information and advice. I suspected as much as I had no joy in a Renault Espace. The Scenic belongs to my daughter and it has AC. Looks like an external antenna will be essential.

I have a 2007 Grand Scenic (imported from Malta) and it has Climate Control AC and I have no problems whatsoever with getting reception on a Nuvi 660. I normaly get all the bars on the strength meter. I also get the Traffic Signal reasonably well now that I've repositioned the wire horizontally.

regards

I have an I3, and have had 4 scenics so far, last two have had automatic A/C.
2004 Scenic - needed external antenna
2007 Scenic - works fine on any part of windscreen. Salesman gave me some BS before I bought it saying that Renault had altered the windscreen coating - turned out he was right!

I have a Renault Laguna II and my wife drives a Renault Scenic, both with A/C and UV screens. The Nuvi 250 works in both 100% with no need for an external ariel Wink

My thanks to all who responded to my query. Did a belt and braces job and bought an external antenna to be on the safe side. I may have to drive my daughter to hospital at short notice for the birth of a granddaughter. Better safe than sorry. No doubt Murphy's Law will prevail now and I will find out that there was never a problem in the first place. Such is Life.

Let us know how it turns out.

It looks like my Scenic II, delivered in late September 2003, which is from an early series of the new Scenic II model, has different coating used on the windscreen. Anyway, I don't mind the small antenna on my roof, it often helped me with reception while driving through town with lots of high buildings.

BeatO

I will be pleased to let you know how everything turns out. My next post may well originate in Spain where I am told daily temperatures are 20 - 22. Hope you don't think I'm rubbing it in but I probably am!!!

To allwho were kind enough to respond to my query.

As I suspected Murphy´s Law prevailed in a big way. There was no problem with the Scenic windscreen and I did not need to do an emergency run to the Hospital. My granddaughter was born on 20 April - both mother and child are well. By the time I get home I will have been in Spain for a month enjoying a mixed bag of weather and getting used to driving on the right!

Congratulations on the birth of your grand-daughter!

Did you get any grief from the Spanish traffic police, I understand that there's a rumour that GPS is now illegal in Spain as it's considered as a distraction! Going to Gerona in a few weeks.

No grief from the Spanish Traffic Police at all but mu Nuvi was not really visible as it was propped in front of the rev. counter and I was listening and not looking very much.

I hope this is helpful. As far as the Spanish Traffic Police are concerned it may be a case of "If you have it DON´T flaunt it" After all, what the eye doesn´t see the Traffic Police may well ignore.

re: the thing with sat navs and Spanish police...

If it's true, I wonder what the policy is with cars that have sat nav built in?

Surely an aftermarket sat nav should be no more of a distraction?
