Well i got it back today, bright and early off the courier, just like a kid with a new toy down the garage we go, on my hands and knees fitting the same unit i sent to Garmin a week ago, plugged it in and ...........NOTHING
Phoned Garmin, usual crap from them, can you go out in the car at your convenience and see if the key will update and start working when it receives a good strong signal, OH YEAH, SURE IT WILL !!!
Well if my crappy GTM12 works, stuck on the inside of the windscreen in the garage then my GTM10, connected to my roof mounted antenna should have no problem at all bearing in mind when it did work, it worked in the garage perfectly. My new subscription says it expires in 2031, hopefully i'll be dead and buried by 81 so i wont need to worry.
Modern day technology, you KNOW it's just crap.

If the unit thinks it's got a valid subscription, then it may pick up after a while - remember the GTM12 will have an FM table that knows what are the good and bad frequencies to use - the GTM10 has likely been reset, and will a little time to re-establish the frequency list.

Interesting that it says "2031" and not "lifetime subscription", but as you say, 2031 is a long time away.

I'm not sure that will help Intrakota, as his unit isn't suffering from a lack of subscription (anymore), and right now it's not a route I would recommend to anyone not suffering from the lost subscription option.

Intrakota - how are you fairing now - is everything back to normal...?

is there any news about this issue?

i have an Kenwood GTM 10 what was working the first tme while showing RAC Live expired 19/9/2007 and had a solid green light. the next time i used it it shows TM-TMC££ expired 19/9/2007 and keeps flasing orange and some times red / green. today i bought an lifetime subscription for $70 and now it shows TM-TMC Lifetime subscription but still doesn't do anything else then flashing orange and red / green... software version is 4.1 and the g520 is on version 3.60...

It's the same as any other update for the g520. I think (and this is based on limited knowledge, as I don't own one) you take the SD card out of the unit and connect that to your PC and use WebUpdater which will be able to update all the main software onto the SD card and then into the unit (and GTM).

However, please take a full backup of the SD card before attempting this, and if you are unsure as to what you are doing, please don't continue.

Oh, and I wouldn't install v4.80 until others have, and can confirm whether it's actually any good or not.... New GTM firmwares have had a habit of producing less reliable traffic than the previous versions before, so if traffic is working, I would not encourage a fast update of the firmware...

@swing. thanks.

if i run WebUpdater it doesn't do anything because it can't find a navigation system connected to the pc. i tried this last night. it needs some thing connected to the pc.

reply from garmin support; call kenwood support...

reply from kenwood support; take the g520 out the car and connect it to your pc by usb. then run WebUpdater and download the firmware...

all my updates i did on the g520 was via the sd card... so i'm not sure if this is gone work. it is a lot of work to remove the g520 from the car...

Ah, now if WebUpdater can't use the SD card, your options are limited. There are tricks for fooling the system into getting the downloads, and then manually copying them to the correct SD card, but even that may well require linking the g520 to a PC for the first time to create the image (if it's even possible).

the kenwood kna-g520 doesn't use the garmin WebUpdater...

new firmware version are just exe files (zip files). you download them from the garmin web site. then extract this file on your pc and copy it on the empty directory \garmin of the sd card and off you go. the file name is \garmin\GUPDATE.GCD. now you insert the sd card and switch on the nav system. you will get an message that the system is making an firmware update. there isn't an image on the sd card since the g520 has an hard disk.

look here for more info, http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/support/navigation_updates/navigation_software_updates/. this link is pointing to the garmin web site.

can you explain me how to download those firmware updates with WebUpdater without a navi connected?

thanks,
bt

The only way is to copy the contents of the internal memory of a Garmin device to a blank SD card and point WebUpdater at this instead. However, as the Kenwood does not use this mechanism, you risk downloading an update not suitable (or tested) for the device, which could be very dangerous. I think your only option is to ask a Garmin user politely for a copy of the GTM firmware file once they have downloaded it via WebUpdater for their unit.

this is a total joke from kenwood support... i already had my doubts about this. since how can you connect a device with no power on your pc by usb. sure usb can power a usb device but a hide away sat computer what normally runs on 12v...

anyway i can tell you that i was the donkey and tried it. NO luck, nada...

so i'm still have a useless gtm 10. i had it going for just 5 min after i started the g520 a couple times without the gtm 10 connected. then connect it and it went on solid green and give me some info about traffic jams...

for now i'm tired of it and just let it. will check it when i'm over on the other side of the channel in the real world where things just work.

after having email contact with another kenwood support officer i updated the gmt-10 to version 4.80 and also some voice updates on the g-520.

this is how i did it.

what you need is an windos laptop / usb cable / wireless internet access / webupdater installed.

connect the laptop to the g-520 while still connected in the car, hence wireless internet! switch on laptop and your garmin kit. the laptop will install a garmin gps drivers and your navi screen will ask you the question Garmin Mode or USB Mass Storage. choose Garmin Mode. test if the laptop has internet access and start webupdater. now webupdater will show you your g-520 and look for updates. in the next screen you will be able to select the TCMxxx updates and also some voice updates. select the required updates and when all is being updated click finish. power down your laptop and switch off the navi system.

the next time you switch on the navi system you will see that it updates your tmc-10, in my case to version 4.80. i also updated some voices.

but my tcm is still not working...

So Kenwood have send me another one back with my subscription transferred.

Now it all works very well! Cool
