I've just read all this topic, after changing my 510 for a nice new 720.
Given the version it came with (shown on my updated profile below) what would the advice be from you all as to what version I should upgrade to?
TTHome is offering to move me to 7.481 - but I've politely declined the offer at the moment! _________________ TomTom 720

I would sit and wait until the next release comes out and see if that fixes the problems, keep a close eye on the forum and you will soon hear about any new versions and what they fix or don't, if any new "features" (I mean bugs) are introduced you will find out reading the forum before messing up your device.
I have no idea if/ when a new release will be made available so it could be a long wait - Mike |

So I'm not missing out on any features or functionality by sticking with the as-supplied vesion? _________________ TomTom 720

Has anyone figured out a way to get the device to switch on without lots off button pressing and resetting? |

Done the reset and restore to factory conditions.
If I choose 'browse map' 'find' 'point of interest' 'poi in city' or any other poi option I still get the 'one moment please' displayed on screen. This never goes away. Another reset cures it for a few minutes! |

Try deleting mapsettings.cfg and doing the resets (back up mapsettings.cfg first)

So, did my response (posted in the thread) count as sufficiently 'inane and unrelated'? ;)
After about half a dozen messages back and forth (each suggesting ludicrous fixes that were clearly canned 'try this' responses) I finally got an admission that there was a problem after I demanded that my query go to second-level support. In the meantime... time for the old software version and never again accepting an update from TomTom until visiting these forums! |

And after all of this, and if TT have accepted it is crap, WHY is Home STILL trying to foist this update on us!
Along with the MapShare dabacle, I'm very wound up with TT today... I think I need a long walk to get my sense of perspective back! |

Judging by Vicky's experience in the "unboxing 930" thread (forgive me i dont know how to link to other threads). TomTom have created a just as buggy v8.002 as well.

I noticed that the 7.480 was very quickly replaced by the 481 update (sorry if I am wrong, but I was in Romania), and it seemed one day they released 480 and the next day was asked to download 481 which I did with no problems at all on 720 (for which it was designed [x20]) and it seemed to be fine. Still no mapshare updates, though probably about 300 sent for correction (Western and Central Europe) and arriving in UK, now my WCE shows less corrections than Western Europe, which seems strange, but updates are now appearing. So tonight is being spent updating all my maps from the 16GB card, by copying to 4GB card and tranferring back.
Is their anyway I can speed this up by setting the 16GB card in the card reader as an additional drive that TTHome will see? We could in the days of Psion 5 and 5mx, but TTHome does not see my attempts. _________________ TomTom Go720 v8.320

Well the installaton of the new Application has corrupted my Tomtom 720.
BACK UP BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING !!!
I will say that before I got board of the new version crashing I did notice some good features. A back up will resolve my problem
Thoughts
The low battery warning gives a good length of warning before the unit turns off. Previously it flashed one and died.
The Taffic menu is now in one screen so is easier to use.
The sat strength bar has moved to vertical and made more space in the info bar - why haven't they put it to good use?
The routing has changed - but doesn't find the quiet routes like my old tomtom navigator 5. Interestingly if you ignore the chosen route it only seems to make one attempt to re-route you - my route home is against its wishes but on the new version tomtom comes round to my route choice much quicker
Traffic delays are shown as grey lines rather than the flashing red white of old so are now harder to spot on a zoomed out map.
Tomtom software now restored - proper test drive tomorrow. |
