|
|
Hi all,
My situation is that i have an earlier model tomtom one with the slightly bigger black case.
I have an SD card in it with my UK maps. This was a backup of the original which i did when i first bought the device and i put the original card safely away.
The status screen of the device says
App 7.162 (8492/071121) OS:2327
29mb ram (free 7.3mb)
GPS v 1.21 Boot 5.0500
Map great-britain-map v 605.0
Now then, for an up coming US trip,i bought an official brand new TomTom map of us and canada on an SD card 2007.
When i put it in my TT it loads and appears to work ok
I thought i could just copy its entire contents to a new 2gig SD card, put the copy in the TT and it would work.
It doesnt.
It just says no map found.
What am i doing wrong??
Thanks
Jo |

I think what you've found is TomTom's method of preventing you from copying the SD card to sell on e-bay, car boots etc. I could be wrong, but I somehow doubt it! _________________ Dennis

Have you copied all the files from the supplied card to the new one? - FAQ #8 which can be found from this Link should detail what is required, although recently there has been some discussion of new maps pre-loaded to SD cards that cannot be moved, it is worth a try though as it is only ones and zeros at data level - Mike |

Im the OP...It would be interesting to know how they could do that?
I am not interested in piracy. I just want to create a copy for use, adding POIs etc and keep my original safe. I even tried the tomtom home appliactio to create a backup but it worked for a while then just froze with the "not responding" message in windows vista... |

If it's a v7 map on a TomTom SD card then you CANNOT copy to a larger back-up SD card.
From TT Support:-
Important! Maps 7.10 on SD cannot be copied to another location because the certificate won't be recognised anymore. The customer will always need to use the original SD card! |

Hmmm.if thats the official line from TT and they have somehow embedded some kind of proprietory security into their newer SD cards then thats fine with me...but i cant back it up using the home aplication either,,im awaiting an email from TT support..im not hopeful
By the way,ive just read the licencing agreement which came in the packaging and it says...
"(2) Copyright......you may either
(a) make one copy of the software solely for backup or archival purposes
or
(b)Transfer the software to a single medium provided you keep the original solely for backup or archival putposes.
So if tomtom have somehow prevented this from happeining then they would appear to be in breach of the licencing agreement? |

Did you point out the Licence conditions to them?
Will make for an interesting reply!
Incidentally - There's some basic info about copyright protection on SD cards HERE (see section 4) |

Well i have had my first feedback from TT and to be honest, they are trying.
I have followed the advice they gave and they did confirm that i can make a copy,
Perhaps TT advisors are not all singing from the same hymn sheet?
Unfortunately their advice did not work and so i have provided a screenshot of the contents of the copied files for their perusal as requested..
It can be viewed here

What is the full file name and extensions(s) of the file:
new_england_and_mid_atlantic_region-...
it is difficult to judge if something is new/ different without the full file name and I think this file might be the key.
Also a screen shot of the actual map folder showing the full file names if possible - Mike |

I saw that, too. To the best of my knowledge, no maps from this side of the pond should be leaving files in the root with a name of a map (the one shown seems to be a regional US map available for purchase).
I don't know how European maps are installed but I'm also curious about the file shown called great_britain (etc).mds. Is that normal? |

I haven't got that file, but how on Earth have I managed to end up with
"UK_and_IE_plus_major_roads_of_WE-xxxxxxxx.mac" on my 720 flash memory!!
I've certainly never had my old UK map from my Go300 anywhere near my 720 and can't see how I could have manually copied that one file by accident.
Is this something Home is doing for some obscure reason?? |

Yes im the OP and that caught my eye too. It must have been put there by tomtom home software on my pc when i plugged my tomtom in via usb. On my GB maps SD card i have new england mid atlantic region because i downloaded it off the TT website and installed it about 18 months ago when i went to east coast USA. Tomtom home must be placing stuff on my newly copied SD card of USA Canada when i connect the TT one device to my pc and run tt home.
See here for the actual maps folder

Have you ever got the new 2GB card to work in the TomTom One with another map installed to it? - the reason I ask is this could be a slow read speed card that the TomTom is actually rejecting, the files in the map folder don't look any different to what I would expect to see - Mike |
