Totally up to you.

Either way make sure you have a backup of the Nuvi first.

It obviously makes good sense to backup before updating the nuvi to a new release of software. Ahem!! Embarassed what is the accepted way to backup the files? Question All I can think of is to make a copy of the Garmin folder contents and store them away from the Garmin removeable drive. Am I missing something here?
(I have looked through the forums for this, but was unable to find anything relevant!)

Make sure you have Hidden Files and Folders showing and then copy the entire contents to your PC, burn to DVD and store safely.

It takes an hour or so to do this out of the box, so I've only done it the once. If the Nuvi needs restoring it only takes a few minutes to reinstall the Firmware and reload the POIs etc after restoring the main data. Can't see the point in backing up everytime a Firmware is released...

Thanks, Paul, I hadn't thought about the hidden file / folders. I know data can be lost following an update. I posted in a different thread that I lost some route data after updating to (I think) v 2.40.
No problems after loading the current update though (2.70) Smile

there may not actually BE any hidden files, but just in case:

if they stay hidden they will not be copied in a backup!

You don't need to save the JPeg files. That's just sample photos for the photo viewer.

The rest is best saved. Saves big headache down the line if you need them and you only need to do it once.

Just did this update. I've done all of the software updates since I go my Nuvi 750. To tell the truth, I have not noticed a thing different, with one exception.

On the original software sometimes when the Nuvi finished simulating a drive from one point to another, when then starting a second simulated drive, if the route called for making a U-turn, it would get stuck. It doesn't do that any more.

But otherwise, while I like to keep the software updated, I have never seen a bug or an advantage.
